I mean good on them if there is actually a market for flipping crappy old boxes like this though…

Bwa ha ha. I think Harry Enfield did a sketch about that.
Maybe there are box fetishists out there though....

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/10/2026 09:16

Reminds me of that daytime TV programme where that woman (Sarah something?*) hangs around recycling centres and takes things that people are just about to dump. Does a bit of painting it yellow and red, a bit of decoupage and then sells the tat for £400.
*she was at our local one one day i went there, but she didn't want my old paint splattered curtains that i had used to cover furniture when decorating.

growinguptobreakingdown · 11/10/2026 09:19

I have 2 of these in my garden with logs in. Who knew they were worth so much!
The Harry Enfield sketch was a shop called "I saw you coming" or similar. DH and I quote it often when looking at some of the shops in my area.

Probably aimed at the commercial side of the business, where interior designers are commissioned to fit out uber trendy shops and are searching for things to fit a look. Used to see it all the time on Salvage Hunter when he picked up items he knew would go into retail places. He knew they'd have a budget of ££££ and paying over the odds for a crate would just get lost in the spend.

That said that sort of money for that is possibly wishful thinking.

singthing · 11/10/2026 09:36

I know someone who had a whole business selling old tat like this - old school desks and chairs were a frequent sight, as were chipped garden planters and the like. And people willingly bought them - for a lot more money than 40 year old municipal furniture should be worth!

Kudos to her tbh!

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 11/10/2026 09:38

£69?!!!!

Hahaha I found this because I am looking for a vintage-y produce crate for storing children’s books. I wouldn’t mind if there was some effort to “upcycle” an old box with some distressed faux old paint stamps saying Covent Garden Fruit Market etc but this is just takes the biscuit 🤣

Nostalgia sells - see the old toys thread running in Chat just now. Heck I bought a 7in high plastic Homepride Fred yesterday. In my defence it was only £10.

"Graded grains make finer flour!" We had a Fred in the kitchen.

Did anyone ever see him and Mr Ben in the same room?

Wine crates were a popular scrounge from Majestic back in the day, though now they'd expect you to buy the wine too. What a blow.

"Wanna buy some shit?"

Is it really expensive shit that will show I have more money than sense? Hell yes, I'll take two.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 11/10/2026 12:05

Just remembered that Harry Enfield's shop was called Blondes of a Certain Age.

After watching it I was in a shop just like it selling overpriced 'luxury' tat and looked round and everyone in there, including me was blonde and a certain age. 😀

Somewhere in a box I have the top half of a McDonalds Hamburglar pen from the 1980s. Even though it is virtually worthless (even with the bottom pen part), I can't bring myself to chuck it!

I also hope I have overlooked a 2" thick stack of original Garbage Pail Kids stickers I had. I am sure I've seen them at least once in the past 15 years, but I fear they got lost in some house move or another. They are definitely worth decent money!

Edited

Remember they're only valuable if loads of other people have thrown their own away. Wanna buy some old happy meal bribes toys?

This strikes me as really ignorant of you tbh 😂 there’s a world of difference between this crate and mid century / utility furniture that has huge design history. I’m guessing you’re not into interiors! When I see some of the ‘my house won’t sell’ posts on here I always wonder who thinks throws and grey sofas / exterior will sell their house 🫠🫠🫠

wifeofeverything · 11/10/2026 15:49

I would buy it for my farm shop 🫣

For £69 + service fee? Lordy. Are you Lisa Hogan?

I am not entirely sure where or how you made the mental leap from old state school desks and metal chairs being high value mid century furniture, to (I think?) accusing me of having grey sofas and therefore apparently no right to speak on the matter?

As it happens, my house is more like Oz than Kansas, but thanks anyway for bestowing your magnificent and gracious all-knowing design wisdom on me. I am now suitably chastised and shall never dare comment on anything where you aren't around to correct my thoughts.

I love Vinterior because of their search engine but you do pay a premium on that site. I saved hundreds on a sofa I saw on there by going direct to the dealer and negotiating. You can get much cheaper wooden crates on ebay but they usually require sanding and nail removal. Which this may or may not also require.

Thanks for the tip! Will give this a go.
