Another poor dog owner....

I was out running on a country lane.
I heard a high pitched whistle in the distance but thought nothing of it. Next thing I became aware of a large dog bounding across the field towards me.
It was fast and seemed determined.
I was worried it was going to jump off the verge to jump up at me so I stopped.
I then realised the whistle was from the owner, a good distance away.
The dog was barking and baring its teeth. It then did respond to the whistle and go back, whereupon the owner gave me a thank you wave.

If your dog does not have good recall please keep it on a lead. Other people should not be made to feel unsafe when they are enjoying the countryside.

Most dog owners are great and we share the paths with respect for each other.

My point is there are ‘less than perfect’ all types of people literally everywhere.
You encountered a slightly less than perfect dog owner today although nothing bad happened to you and it ended up being a non event. As an owner of four dogs I get fed up of these moany dog posts!!!

Something bad did happen - I was scared and wondering what I'd do if it jumped on me.
It clearly can respond to the whistle, but it seems that it forgot what it needed to do when it saw a runner. Only when I was stopped did it respond to the whistle.
Thank goodness nothing worse did happen (it has in the past).

I am sure you feel the same as I do when I read posts about idiot/entitled runners.
I did state that most dog owners are great. I assume you are one of them and I'm sure we'd give each a nice smile and a thank you as we navigated a shared path together.

Fed up of hearing that off lead dogs “are friendly” after one bit my child, tearing right through two layers of clothing. The owners were still saying it was friendly while we were checking the wound.

I genuinely feel that people cannot cope with anything less than perfect these days. Its depress

A dog tugging at the lead while under control and me having to jump to the side would be less than perfect.
A dog running towards me and then being successfully recalled would be less than perfect (a few moments of 'oh shit...it's coming from me and I can't see the owner').
Realising there is a long, retractable lead across the path is less than perfect.

A dog with its owner a good distance away, ineffectively recalling it while it barks and shows it teeth is a scary situation to be in.

This owner was too far away to even have that conversation!
I hope your child was OK and is not now scared of dogs.
