Period has arrived before going away on beach holiday - what to do ?

Im peri and my periods are all over the place. Only been 2 weeks since the last one, before that it was a 6 week gap. Do I:

A) Let it be and just pray it's super light - it could be either light or heavy. Im so up and down what with peri

Or

B) Take medication to stop/reduce the flow .. but this could make for a super heavy & lengthy period when I get home .. and im going to a spa 10 days after getting home

Thoughts ?

Transexamic acid. It doesn't mean you will bleed more later.

fruitbrewhaha · 07/10/2026 10:09

Moon cup. I found it really excellent with a heavy flow.

I ve had the mirena installed because of heavy periods. It’s been amazing.

OriginalSkang · 07/10/2026 10:10

You have to take the medication for a week before your period starts. My DD has taken it twice in the last two years, both times its given her acne.

How did you survive until peri without learning how to handle a period? This is ridiculous. Buy tampons and get on with your life.

Wow. You haven't had a peri meno period I'm guessing!

Floods, large clots and excruciating pain were the hallmarks for me!

I got transexamic acid which reduces the bleed and then a mirena. I still have peruods and cramps but so much better than it was before.

OriginalSkang · 07/10/2026 10:11

I would double bag it with tampons and pads

Edit: You can buy swimming period pants too I think? Maybe you could wear them under your costume on the beach?

Seaside3 · 07/10/2026 10:13

Tampons, pads, change of underwear and a spare of shorts in your bag.

Also, wherever you are going they will have period products, so if you need anything you can buy there.

Enjoy your holiday!

I am a woman and I am in peri :) but I don't hate my periods, if I bleed I manage that, if I have pain I manage that as well.

I am from a different culture though, life just goes on whether you are on a period or not.

FiveEightNine · 07/10/2026 10:22

I'd just buy something (period pants, dark shorts) at the airport or at your destination.

Ablian · 07/10/2026 10:25

I believe ibuprofen can take the edge off the flow. No idea if you can mix it with other meds people are suggesting.

You can use all pain relief along with transexamic acid. TXA basically dries up the blood and stops you bleeding. It's a miracle drug.

Well yes, but it's not much fun if you are leaking through your period pants plus tampon and doubled over with cramps on holiday is it?

I just used tampons all my life until peri, overnight as well as during the day. I now have to double up with pads as well as tampons and change them much more regularly, I have bled over sofas, train seats, clothes, bedding. I once sneezed and a massive clot of blood shot out and stained the front of my dress. The point is saying "how have you managed all your life" is nonsense, because how you have managed until now doesn't work any more.

life goes on for OP too, she is just trying to find the best way of managing it. I have never missed a thing because of my periods, however now I am in peri some times my periods are light, sometimes normal, then randomly one month I can bleed through 2 super + tampons within an hour.

Again it has never stopped me doing anything but I wouldn't relish a beach holiday during it. No harm in asking other women for support and how they manage it

Yes, that’s what women from all cultures do - manage their periods. They manage the bleeding and the pain and their life goes on, every woman does this. Doesn’t mean they love their periods. I wonder how many would choose to keep having them if given the choice to never have one again (if fertility would stay the same) not many , if any, I would imagine.
I hate my period every month but I manage it like a pro and get on with my life

Also recommend a moon cup They hold a lot more than a tampon. You could pair it was a pad just in case you were worried about leaks

sorry - it’s rubbish sometimes being a woman.

WildLeader · 07/10/2026 11:16

Honestly, get the meds and take them all the way through AND for spa break. Just do it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/10/2026 11:22

You can buy clothes at a lot of airports and destinations where you’re going to.

You keep saying this, but you’re clearly not comparing like with like. Very difficult to ‘manage it like a pro’ when you’re on a train to a work conference, bleeding so heavily that you’ve bled through the clothes you were wearing plus the change of clothes you brought with you, despite frequently changing tampons and pads.

And before you ask, yes, I’d sought treatment, was taking tranaxemic acid, had had a transvaginal scan and had had a mirena coil (the first of which I’d bled out in a giant clot).

After endometrial ablation, and a replacement mirena, it eventually cleared up, but it was incredibly disabling when it was happening, and not something you could treat as life as usual.

I had to ask at reception where family was staying (my hotel was farther away and I was staying separately) for tampons when on holiday abroad.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/10/2026 11:28

Just use tampons and period pants. I wouldn’t mess with medication when you’re all over the place.

Soggydog · 07/10/2026 12:05

Ive just gone on medication with a pill and oestrogen for the same. Hoping it will calm things down. Ive been using most absorbent tampons, towels and period pants together and its unpredictable too. Peri is a ***. I would definitely take medication to enjoy a holiday and deal with the consequences at home later. Alternative is likely feeling tense about if you will leak and exhausted.

Soggydog · 07/10/2026 12:06

And actually, will it really make you any more all over the place when you cant predict if you get a week or 6 between bleeds?

purplecorkheart · 07/10/2026 12:20

I would go with the tampons (extra super lillets are good orange packet). If you have time order some period swimwear. I would be avoiding the medication.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 07/10/2026 12:23

Period pants and period swimwear. It's annoying but hardly a massive deal. I wouldn't do medication. If you're really in peri then this may not work anyway.

momager22 · 07/10/2026 12:31

Norheristrone needs taking before your period is due to it won’t help.
id just roll with it. Unfortunate, but lots of women have periods on holidays.
