My son is 2y4m and has essentially no spoken words. He seems to understand around 90% of what we say and communicates really well through pointing, eye contact, gestures, signs and noises. He has good joint attention, affection, pretend play and social interaction, but has always babbled very little and rarely attempts to copy speech sounds.

He also seems to get overstimulated quite easily. When excited/overwhelmed he can run around a lot, and he can have meltdowns or “shutdowns” where he cries, goes floppy and doesn’t want interaction. He has some strong interests/preferences (hats, particular TV programmes) but isn’t particularly rigid about routines or change, doesn’t have much repetitive play and generally copes well with noises/textures.

His fine motor/problem-solving skills seem good, although his gross motor development has been slightly slower (walked at 18 months and isn’t quite properly running/jumping yet).

Has anyone had a child with a really similar overall profile? Did it eventually turn out to be a speech/motor-speech issue, autism, sensory/regulation differences, general developmental delay or something else? And how are they doing now?

oh and yes he had had hearing checked and is in regular speech therapy

Has he had a hearing test?
Has he been referred for speech therapy?

Yes to both. He’s had therapy since he was 2!

2 of mine had speech delays, one was just glue ear and resolved, the other also caught up speech-wise by 3 but was referred for an autism assessment aged 9.

Has the speech therapist suggested what the issue might be?

dd didn’t day anything at that she. Then suddenly at 2years 7 months she said ”pheobe hit me”. Pheobe was a girl in her childminders, younger than her. After that she started speaking in full sentences.

Did she babble or make noises? Did you get her any speech therapy or encourage her at all? Thanks 🙏

My son had no words at all until he was nearly 3. We had one speech therapy appointment. The therapist noticed he had good understanding, could follow basic instructions etc. She said he was just delayed. Turned out she was right. After he'd been at nursery for a few months, the words came flooding out!

bababamama · 05/10/2026 14:15

Both my DD’s were very late talking, dd2 was 2.5, dd1 was nearly 4, only dd1 is autistic, dd2 has dyslexia and diagnosed with ADHD as an adult

Did he babble or say words and then lose them before hand?

Your DS sounds largely fine. They all come to things in their own time and they all have firm likes/dislikes. Many of them go from 0 to 60 regarding speech - hardly making any sounds and then speaking in sentences or even paragraphs.
Sometimes meeting other children inspires them - I've known a few who started talking mainly to communicate with a new sibling.

(DD2 loved hats even in v warm weather b/c they stopped her hair from blowing around.)

DNiece was slow to speak. She had an older brother and lots of family around to meet her needs. She showed understanding and could follow directions. She was very slow to walk due to hypermobile joints only diagnosed belatedly.

She did make some efforts to speak but was unintentionally talked over by all the adults around her - keen to model best speech. Her speech therapist pointed out that animal sounds (woof, neigh, etc) count as speech/words. The therapist advised less talking from the adults so that DN would need to speak more and could have the chance. We were all instructed to wait for DN to ask for what she wanted/needed.

Fifteen years later and she's scored all 9s and a 7 on her GCSEs and is predicted 3x A* with a possible Cambridge offer. Plus she is super sporty: hockey, rowing, windsurfing, kayaking and kickabout non-stop.

No. No speech therapy. Her brother was a Late talker as well.

He didn't have any words at all. He'd babble, and use different tones, but no words at all.

My son doesn’t babbles so not sure how can learn to speak without this first

My oldest son didn't talk until about that and didn't babble at all either . Just a bit delayed. He had caught up by about 3.5

What did you find got him going? And did he say words but then lose them beforehand?
