Who remembers that one? Easily the scariest thing I’ve ever read on here and I’ve never quite been able to forget it.

Any other spooky stories to share as we get closer to Halloween?

Was a great yarn!!! Have nothing to top it, tho.

PrettyLittleRose · 05/10/2026 00:00

Can you share it, or a link? I have no idea what story you're on about.

Trallers · 05/10/2026 00:10

I do remember the time of the thread but I didn't actually read it properly as I was worried it would creep me out and I wouldn't sleep Grin I would read it now though as it was just the sleep deprivation of toddlers that had me on edge and easily scared! What was the synopsis OP?

aminchargeist · 05/10/2026 00:13

Do an Advanced Search to find it.

Still the creepiest, scariest thing I have ever read...just re read it and got the shivers.
I sometimes walk my dog there when we go for a Breed meet up and it's always in the back of my mind, even in broad daylight!
I'm a pragmatic, non woo person but still...

I was scared going to the loo last night just having thought of it 😂 Embarrassing. Had to give myself a shake.

Thanks for the link @FunBoyThreesome I know it's just me, but I don't really find this story really thrilling or chilling. It was probably just someone clay pigeon shooting.

Each to their own.

I think you might have been looking at a different story? It’s one at 10:40 on my link. Not the one mentioning the thatcher’s labourer.

That was a little chilling but wouldn’t keep me awake at night 😜

@FunBoyThreesome@Sonolanona Are you into horror in general?. I just wonder if I'm de sensitized. I watch a lot of horror movies and listen to lots of creepy Podcast but I just didn't find this tale Scary. It's a pretty standard formula for a ' scary woods story '. What do you find so Scary about it?, you.know.its a made up story right?

ShopCake · 05/10/2026 14:33

I admit I'm always puzzled as to how the Savernake story has got so much currency on here, and that people seem to think it's any more likely to be true than Tristan, Molly and the campng pods. Grin

Or the haunted office in the converted mill. I quite liked that one. It was pacy and low-key.

FunBoyThreesome · 05/10/2026 14:34

@Ohhhthedrama I freely admit I’m a total lightweight. I can imagine that a lot of people wouldn’t find it in the least bit scary.

I don’t believe in any of that stuff anyway. But it still terrifies me!

OP posts:
FunBoyThreesome · 05/10/2026 14:35

@ShopCake I don’t know the haunted office one. I vaguely remember Tristan and Molly. For some strange reason this story stuck in my mind.

I'm pretty sure it's the same one.. The one you posted the link to was about someone hearing (or thinking they heard) gunfire? (Near where the Hungerford massacre was...) And I said, they were probably just hearing clay pigeon shooting, or someone hunting. I don't think it's that rare to hear gunfire in woodlands and forests, but they thought it was something ghostly....

As I said, I can't see anything scary in this story personally, and have never got the excitement on here for it....

I'm not a sceptic, and don't disbelieve people when they talk about seeing/ hearing/experiencing woo stuff,, but I don't think this was one of those times quite honestly...

Ohhhthedrama · 05/10/2026 14:36

If you fancy some real good scary stuff there's some good Reddit subs. Especially the stories from the Appalachian mountains.

38thparallel · 05/10/2026 14:37

I meet a friend there to walk the dogs. Hmm….it is a bit spooky. Also there a local loony Lord who maintains trespass watch even though it’s let on a 999 year lease.

Well what are you talking about then?

THIS is on the link you posted.... And this is what I am responding to...

Have name changed for this as it will totally out me!
This is on the theme of the PPs, having had a near miss with the likes of Levi Bellfield and Fred West.
In the Spring of 1987 I was heart sick of the job I trained for and decided to have a summer off and do something different. Through a contact, I got a job as a labourer for a well known local thatcher near my home village in Wiltshire. It was great. Very physical, the old gent I was working for was a lot of fun and he enjoyed winding up the American tourists when they came to photograph us. Giving silly names to the tools and lying about what they were used for (measuring smoke) etc.
I had a dog and took her for a walk in my lunch break in Savernake Forest which was at the top of the hill on which the house we were working on was situated.
The following day, I was sat on the roof with one leg either side of the ridge and my back to the chimney putting points on spars and throwing them at the thatcher who banged them into place. From the forest, I heard automatic gunfire and told the thatcher this. He was nonplussed and then adamant it came from the car radio which was on but on the other side of the roof. I denied this so he suggested it came from Salisbury Plain (military training ground) . The wind was in the wrong direction for this though.
As I drove home, I heard on the car radio about the Hungerford massacre but I knew we were 10 plus miles from Hungerford. On the TV that evening they reported that the gunman killed his first victim in Savernake Forest in the exact spot I had been with my dog and at the exact time, but the day before! I was also aware that had he chosen to drive into Marlborough for his murderous spree instead of Hungerford, the thatcher and I would have been the first two people he would have likely seen and as he was apparently shooting at random it's a scary thought. He had his reasons for driving to Hungerford that day but I'm glad I missed him in the forest by a day!*

There isn't even a post at 10.40 on this thread @FunBoyThreesome !!!

And why are you disengaging now, and refusing to copy and paste the story?

I can only surmise you have realised it IS the one in your link! Wink (Which was 00.26 today, not 10.40!)

I used to camp in Savernake Forest a lot when DS was small and he was convinced he saw a bear in there. A story which was corroborated by his best friend complete with roars and lots of arm waving.

I also used to work with a relative of the Hungerford gunman.
