Am I an introvert or just really strange?

I don't really enjoy people's company. I have 2 Dd's and genuinely think they are the only people in the world I properly love spending time with. I have a "best friend" who I chat to over social media regularly but don't really see that often. I have another group of friends who again I chat to fairly regulary vut don't see that often. They try to arrange meet ups and quite frankly I can't really be bothered seeing them, i enjoy chatting and hearing about their life but that's enough for me. I have siblings, parents and nieces/nephews who i'm quite close to and would say I generally enjoy their company but would still happlily not bother seeing too much of them. This has come to light for me becuse my DH has recently changed job and is at home much more in the evenings and even he's starting to grate on me 🙈 What is wrong with me. I'm invited to plenty of things but often make excuses because quite honestly i'd rather spwnd the evening with my kids or walking the dog ON MY OWN. Is anyone else like this? Am I just really weird?

Be careful what you wish for! What will you have when your DD’s leave home, go to uni, forge their own family lives, move to the other end of the country, maybe emigrate to Australia. And then if your husband is unhappy that he grates on you and he leaves, what have you got left?! Nothing stays the same in this world and you may have regrets at not nurturing relationships

Nah! She can just get a second dog!

I'm a bit like this, truth be told.

I love people's company at times. But my happy place is by myself.

I would say I'm chatty and warm in person. I have some lifelong friends that I trust. But in general I don't have friends except dh and the two dds.

Two cats are plenty of company for me. Sometimes I think I could be like the grandma in red riding hood, living in the woods alone with occasional visits.

It was even more pronounced when I worked full time and the kids were small. My heart would sink at the idea of socialising.

To be honest I can't say I've even ever loved big family gatherings. I like small get togethers. But I could take or leave them.

Luckily dh is even worse than me. He makes me look like a socialite. 😆

I could have written this. I have to encourage dh into the office a few days a week otherwise he gets too chatty.

DC are near adults, they're all quiet and have limited contact with friends but do regular hobby groups which seems to be enough for them.

I have horses at a large yard so I'm around people without having to speak to them unless I want to, I think that's perfect, I can chat all day or say good morning and not interact any more.

So you sound perfectly normal to me. Need to bare in mind it's the extroverts who set the 'rules' about what life should look like because they're the ones being vocal.

This post nails it for me. How did we get to a place where 'extroverts' are claiming the 'normal' label, and us introverts are somehow seen as 'odd'??
I love my own company, never fret about spending time on my own. I have a few very good friends (some are extroverts!) and I enjoy their company very much-in relatively short bursts (an afternoon or evening is fine, but a full day or langer starts to feel like hard work). My DP is an extrovert, and it can be quite hard for me-but I appreciate that he helps push my boundaries a bit!
OP-you are not weird/unreasonable in your social preferences. Do what gives you peace and happiness. Spend your time in ways that give you strength and energy. And it's really good that you are giving-and encouraging-your DC opportunities to engage socially in ways that don't necessarily suit you.

I am n very outdoing and social However, could just as easily spend time on my own and used too regularly before I was married/kids/dog. I love and enjoy being out with family/friends etc and I can stay home all weekend without even using social media! (I love watching telly though) after I have cooked myself and the dog something nice :)

Macaroni46 · 05/10/2026 20:15

Just remember that your DDs will grow up and move out and you may not always be married. I went from a busy family home with 4 people in it to living completely on my own within a very short space of time. Without having a strong network of friends life would be very lonely. I too like my own company but not 24/7.

I’m a bit like this but I do go out and see people but I have a very short social battery. My DH’s fam will organise weekends away and honestly I dread it. I go to bed early once they all start getting drunk then lie there and think why aren’t I with them. They are lovely I just do better one or two on one.

FairViewRosie25 · 05/10/2026 21:07

I’m a bit like this retired 2 years not that many friends - my best friend is like a sister to me and we talk every couple of weeks see each other every 4/5.. got another bestie from work who we text most days.
Decided I was being insular went to a fortnightly crochet in a village 10 miles away, was bricking it but was welcomed with open arms and love it. That was a year ago. 2 months ago found a line dancing class which has had the same big welcome.
i do like my own company, playing my piano and doing my crafts but it is nice to see other people

I think it's a bit unusual to find your husband annoying

Ha well maybe it isn't but I mean for introversion purposes I think partners are usually on the inside track

I find people draining but also absolutely need company which IS a bit weird probably

Dowegothere · 05/10/2026 21:21

I could have written this myself. Always been like this! I used to get so upset worrying there was something wrong with me. Couldn’t understand why everyone had to go to the loo together or stand in a queue together. I felt like I had to be vigilant and watch what everyone else said and did so I could copy them and not be seen as odd 😂 I would also disappear on a night out (I know that’s terrible on reflection) and head home without telling anyone. Once I’ve had enough, that’s it. I can’t pretend anymore.

I have accepted my introvertedness now. Nobody I know has ever admitted to feeling the same so it’s refreshing to hear all the comments from fellow introverts.

Maybe perimenopause? I was starting to find mine annoying then knew it was time to go on hrt 😆

cupfinalchaos · 05/10/2026 22:29

I’m similar to you op. It’s all very well on here people saying it’s perfectly normal, but in my world it isn’t at all.

I'm totally the same in finding people draining but needing them too! How does everyone explain this to their friends? Mine don't understand, if we have a weekend away and I say I just need to be by myself for a bit, they just look at me ..

It's very odd how extroverts just can't imagine it

But then I don't understand how they keep going like the Duracell bunny
