If you're not really prepping, just getting ahead a little...

What have you stocked up on this last month?

We've not got a huge amount of storage room and I don't want to stockpile lots of stuff just for the sake of it.

I hate all the scaremongering but I don't want the stress of Covid times.

I got a Costco card recently and have bought the big pack of loo rolls and a huge pack of washing powder

I've ordered a shed load of wood for the log burner

I always batch cook and I'm running the freezer down to do a big re-stock over half term

I bought an extra pack of pasta and some tuna last week

Dh is considering one of the big battery things that you can charge using solar panels (that's more long term cost saving)

My work friend is a serious prepper and thinks I'm being too laid back!

What are you doing if you're not a serious prepper but may be dipping your toe in?

water - 4xpacks, they stack and fit into a corner of the store room

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 02/10/2026 20:30

Similar to you- a few extra tins/pasta. We have camping stuff in loft- might think about getting gas for the gas camp cooker.... torches- chargers, batteries etc.

Ihateboris · 02/10/2026 20:31

Powerbanks
Battery operated lights
Batteries
Dog food!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2026 20:54

Every week on my shopping I spend £10-15 on some extra bits. I try to think around a plan for a day so a breakfast/ lunch/ dinner rather than individual items (beans, tuna etc unless I can make a meal). I’ve pretty much got enough food now as it’s hard to keep it stored, I am now thinking about candles and things like that. I’d like a power bank but not sure which one to buy. And a small amount of cash as we almost never use it so have none.

babasaclover · 02/10/2026 20:54

I’ve always got lots of tinned / packaged food in cause I hate shopping!

amazon essential beans etc well cheap.

I have thought about buying extra charcoal for the bbq in case we lose electric / gas

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 02/10/2026 21:31

I'm trying to focus on things that we would use (and that my ND kids rely on) but might be in short supply. The main issue is probably anything made with wheat if harvests have been bad, so things like flour, pasta etc. I'm not too worried about washing liquid and loo rolls as there is no reason (in terms of what's been happening in the world this year) for them to be in short supply.

I am considering buying a cheap camping stove though just in case.

Diversion · 02/10/2026 21:38

Basic household supplies such as loo roll and washing liquid may not be in short supply right now, but if the delivery chain breaks down due to such things as a shortage of diesel then the shops will not get restocked. Most supermarkets only hold about 3 days worth of stock and if there is a long power cut then the shops may close completely.

Rockpunkdisco · 02/10/2026 21:45

Well because DH has all the bbq type gadgets and load of gas bottles I'm not too worried!

We have however started to buy bottled water packs, although have the magical straws to drink from anywhere. Got a wood burner, not reliant on electricity for heat.

Freezer food, tinned food, think we would ok for a while.

He did actually have the astronaut vacuumed packs of food which helped during covid before they went out of date. Xx

Erm nothing at all. Are people actually worried about the winter ?

It's the government advice to prep for supply shocks or incidents.

IceCreamCone543 · 03/10/2026 19:27

I've made sure I have more power banks, a wind-up radio and a gas camping stove. Obviously extra cans and bottled water. Looking at some larger solar chargers currently

Liverpoolxxx · 03/10/2026 20:03

Pet food and hay. Should manage at least 6 months.

Pasta and rice.

Have collected and dried kindling for the Kelly Kettle. Should go and get more really.

CaffeinatedMum · 03/10/2026 20:05

Water, UHT milk, big bag of pasta, dog food, some snacks like cereal biscuits, and tinned food.

We do Who Gives A Crap so almost always have loads of toilet roll and I tend to buy washing up liquid etc in bulk anyway as it is cheaper that way.

I’ve also bought a little battery operated radio and two battery operated camping lamps.

My OH thinks I’m being over the top but ever since having to venture to a supermarket while heavily pregnant just as lockdown hit and seeing all the empty shelves, I’ve always preferred to be a little prepared.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/10/2026 21:26

I recommend microwave rice because it's ready cold, or can be cooked quickly on a camping stove without more water.

You don't want to be relying solely on things that need to be on the hob in water.

You need a mix of:

  • tinned, dried and long life
  • freezer
  • no heat
  • no fridge
  • fresh but long lasting

For example, we buy lactose free milk because it lasts a month unopened in the fridge. So in a supply chain issue we'd have a month before we needed to switch over to UHT. Similarly I'm buying extra apples etc as they last a long time. Ditto cheese.

Newusername2026 · 03/10/2026 21:50

Nothing at all but I always like to be well stocked up. In case of serious emergency I doubt it would help but at least aI won't have to join panic buying queues we etc (eg as seen just prior to COVID lock down)

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/10/2026 21:56

I have stocked some tins and some pasta sachets things you add water too. Pasta and sauce I think it's called.
I want to get water and tinned fruit.
I also want to get a battery radio.

GobbolinoCat · 03/10/2026 21:58

I got some uht milk only four packs / will 12 be enough in total ?

Extra water but again no where near enough for four people /2 litres a day !
Pasta / some tins of soup. I guess I need more things to go with soup like rivita ?
We already have a camping stove ,the kettle takes ages to heat though.

I need to get some new hot water bottles !
Look for sleeping bags etc and thermal socks etc. ..

I also need to get some cereal bars that's a good idea ^^ .
Some cans of mango etc as a treat from water.

henlake7 · 03/10/2026 22:05

TBH I usually buy a month or two worth of supplies at a time just coz it's easier and I have to think about shopping less. And I always have a decent amount of tinned and dried things in.
just bought a power bank and I have some solar and battery lights but I am thinking about buying a wind up/ solar radio as well.
plus I have a decent supply of bottled water, mainly coz my water company is a bit crap and I don't trust them!

GobbolinoCat · 03/10/2026 22:19

I need to get all our torches ready and do A battery check.
Also need to gather all winter things /boots and gloves /hats and so on.
And buy more thermals .

middleagedandinarage · 03/10/2026 22:26

I'm really confused, what is everyone stocking up for?

Yes what’s happening?

middleagedandinarage · 03/10/2026 22:43

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/10/2026 22:34

Oh. I thought WW3 had been announced or something. I'm north scotland so we're usually cut off by snow for a few days at some point most winters. I remeber as a child missing two weeks of school because we were snowed in

Bufftailed · 03/10/2026 22:44

Water. Got 3 x 5l. Want to get to 50l. Few extra tins

GobbolinoCat · 03/10/2026 22:45

Lots of instability globally re Russia threats and weather issues .
