Sorry if there's another thread already - I did check.

Esther Rantzen has sadly passed away. I very much hope that she went peacefully and in a way that she wanted to. Have such huge respect for her for all of the incredible campaigning that she did through her lifetime.

Many people knew about Jimmy Saville, but let’s blame the woman, yes?

By any measure she was an inspirational, formidable woman. May she rest in peace.

Many people didn't have a phoneline to help children, whilst knowing about terrible abuse and saying nothing.

BrinkWomanship · 30/09/2026 20:26

I hope her memory is a blessing to her family and all who knew her.

She was a very good egg.

Megamegablahblah · 30/09/2026 20:27

Oh that is sad.

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/09/2026 20:30

A brave woman. Her stance on assisted dying was commendable.

I am sad she is gone she was a great proponent of advancing consumer rights.

she set up the child line, and the silver line. A great driver for social issues.

And then she has died we all will and most likely it will not be pleasant. Unless one is taken suddenly by a heart attack or an aneurism, or some other sudden death occurrence.

She was 86 years old so a good inning.

BUT here is the but, she did not go to gravitas to end her life despite having the money to do so.

She lived her life to the last minuet, and good for her.

And yet she has pushed a bill to kill people who are vulnerable, because that was at the time what she thought was what SHE wanted.

So my lament is with a caveat. Her legacy is for ever tainted in going down a wrong road.

In just your opinion.

Well of course it is duh

Having seen my beloved Dad die a horrible death from cancer, I really hope she got a peaceful end and her family aren't traumatised from watching it.

It's taken me over 3 years to recover from seeing my Dad's last few weeks.

Yes i agree about watching death and the flipping mental imprint of a person, you knew differently.

but that is something we must. Not shield ourselves from.

She didn’t go because she wasn’t able to travel.

You said her legacy is tainted. I suggest many more people won't think that than will.

Hedgehogforshort · 30/09/2026 20:50

morart · 30/09/2026 20:46

She didn’t go because she wasn’t able to travel.

Because she left it too late, whilst savouring the moments she had left.

That is the point. People mostly cling on to every moment of their life where they have love, and support around them.

less so the lonely, vulnerable neglected and abused.

OldWallpaper · 30/09/2026 20:51

Rest in peace Esther.

She wanted to go to Digitas but had left it too late. Hope she is at peace now

That's right - proving the point well made that people who travel to dignitas have to go while fit enough, ending their lives sooner than would've done had the option been available at home.

It saddens me she never got her wish, but she did an amazing job raising it these last few years.

Picoloangel · 30/09/2026 21:06

RIP Esther Rantzen I’m so sad that she did not get the end to her life that she campaigned so tirelessly to achieve.

tanktopper · 30/09/2026 21:08

I have reached the age in life where finding out people like Esther have died really makes me melancholic and nostalgic. I think it's because I associate her with my childhood, and a time when we'd all sit and watch the same TV shows at the same time. Things seem to have changed so much in a short time.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 30/09/2026 21:09

I owe Childline (and Esther by proxy) an awful lot, possibly even my life to some extent.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. I hope she endured minimal suffering and is now peaceful.

Dollymylove · 30/09/2026 21:12

Rest in peace Dame Esther 💗 a national treasure for sure 🥰

Esther Rantzen who knew about Jimmy Saville, that Esther Rantzen?

Many many many people knew about Jimmy Saville throughout the years. The staff at the BBC, some police, some journalists. People knew of this before Jimmy was dead, even after he died a journalist tried several of the major newspapers and they wouldn't publish it. The BBC blocked a story on it too. Christ, even Johnny Rotten spoke about his seediness back in the late 70's, and the BBC cut that part from the interview and was seemingly banned from the bbc radio.

I would argue that the victims were let down by many people in power for too many years but yeah, let's place the blame at Esther eh?

RIP to one of the few celebrities who walked the walk and made a difference to millions. What an amazing legacy she leaves behind!

So true never thought about it like that. I remember listening to a podcast of a woman who helped her mother go. She was arrested in this country when she got back. Took years for her to prove her mother wasn’t coerced into going and it was her free will. Didn’t realise that the expenses pay for your flight and accommodation for the one night but you then have to arrange for the ashes to be couriered back to you.

I still say 'sausages' like the speaking dog...
RIP Ether. Fond memories of being all bathed, ready for bed but allowed to stay up to watch That's Life.
