Be honest, zero judgment - how often do you steal from supermarket self-checkouts?

My theory is, “decent, up-standing” people do it a lot more than they’d ever admit. Let’s try to stop this thread descending into judgement and criticism of people who are just answering the question honestly. Otherwise they just won’t be honest. No judgement from me, as long as we’re talking large chain supermarkets only. I’ll admit that I sometimes forget to weigh fruit & veg, get to the till and can’t be bothered going back so don’t bother paying. Occasionally in the past when money’s been tight I haven’t paid for a few of the more expensive items like laundry detergent, nappies, the odd bottle of wine. But we’re talking 3 or 4 times I year. I’m not some sort of serial shoplifter and I consider myself a decent person (although I’m sure I’ll swiftly be told I’m not on here 🤣) anyway, would be interested to hear how often the mostly upstanding, middle-class MN population really does it…

Never. Just not something I would ever think of doing and I would totally judge anyone who did, unless their circumstances were desperate.

MaggieBsBoat · 29/09/2026 09:35

Never. I’ve never stolen in my life and hopefully will never need to.
I’m judging you OP sorry. You’re a wrong’un

PurpleLovecats · 29/09/2026 09:35

Never. Even when we are really skint, I just would feel awful if I did it.

ManyATrueWord · 29/09/2026 09:35

Never. People who do wrong things rationalise it to themselves but they are still doing wrong. See also: adultery.

nextchapterplease · 29/09/2026 09:35

Never here too- I get so annoyed by self checkouts presumption that we are trying to steal with all the over zealous weighing etc - but I guess it must be common

StuntNun · 29/09/2026 09:35

Never. But I don’t ever steal from supermarkets.

EmpressStorm · 29/09/2026 09:35

Genuinely never, I’m not a shop lifter, and have no desire to be, I do understand if someone is poor though and the temptation to shop lift, so no judgement in that scenario but I’d urge people to use food banks etc and try to get what they need honeslty.

I don’t think not stealing is having particularly high morals

But yes we were taught right from wrong as children 🤣

Weren’t you OP??

Clearly not.

Never.

Askandyforcompo · 29/09/2026 09:36

Never. It wouldn't cross my mind.

Why are you laughing like it's cute or funny?

You stealing means I have to pay more for items, so it's not cute or funny to me, it's fucking irritating.

SylvanMoon · 29/09/2026 09:37

I don't use self-checkouts on principle if I can help it and I've never intentionally knowingly or deliberately snuck something through a till without paying. If I were penniless and starving, perhaps I might be tempted, but I'm not.

SoftSpotForDandelions · 29/09/2026 09:37

Never but I was the anxious kid that didn't even steal pick and mix from Woolworths back in the day 😆

Teffe · 29/09/2026 09:38

Never. To the point of pain if I accidentally put in the wrong bakery item I laboriously correct the till to pay the extra 5p or whatever

dh would never

we’re both decent people and yes I judge anyone who steals in the UK where there is a generous social security safety net (and I have relied on benefits in the past so yes I do know what it is like to live on a tight budget).

AnneShirleyBlythe · 29/09/2026 09:38

I went to morrisons straight from the gym the other week carrying my refillable water bottle. Self service has a camera now so it flagged that I was carrying something that I didn’t scan! The supermarkets are onto the thieves & making it more difficult. Personally I have never stole from a shop.

nomas · 29/09/2026 09:38

Alwaysthelastone · 29/09/2026 08:57

LOL ok I’ll take that, maybe I am a serial banana thief!

if everyone stole bananas, then profits from bananas stall, then supermarkets will try and lower the price they pay to the poor banana farmers.

So everything you do has an impact.

Stealing wine seemes really scummy to me. Wine isnt an essential.

LadIsInPain · 29/09/2026 09:39

Never.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 29/09/2026 09:39

Never. Literally, never.

Lexibletheflexible · 29/09/2026 09:39

Never. I'd be mortified to have "shoplifting" on my criminal record. In my nearest Waitrose, I've been there twice when normal seeming middle class women have been caught stealing. Both stole bottles of wine and cheese. Crazy.

sohard · 29/09/2026 09:39

WTF?!?! Never ever.

Its fine to judge someone for stealing but an over 25 on UC gets 434 pounds a month.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/09/2026 09:39

Once by accident. Payment didn’t go through and I didn’t notice. Went back a week later and tried to explain but the assistant couldn’t have given less of a fuck. I’m saying I owe you £9.72 and she literally just shrugged 😂

SillyGooseyGander · 29/09/2026 09:40

WTAF. Never! I certainly am judging tbh.

Not at all normal and should not be normalised.

What stops me? Uhmm... moral code, I guess? It's wrong and the idea feels deeply wrong in my gut. Obviously fear and shame at being caught would also be a deterrent, but honestly even if it was guaranteed I wouldn't get caught - I just couldn't.

Hollowvoice · 29/09/2026 09:41

Never intentionally.
But did get home once to realise something in my bag wasn't on the receipt, complicated to explain but I realised I'd picked up the wrong item and said to the staff member that I needed to go and swap it. I think what happened was she thought I'd scanned the thing to be swapped so cancelled the last scan I'd done while I ran round the shop but I'd realised it was wrong before scanning so she'd cancelled the previous item.
