Does a full moon affect human and / or animal behaviour?

I've noticed that it's a full moon here in the UK tonight.
When I worked in the emergency sevices it was generally thought that a full moon can affect human behaviour.
I don't think that any official research has ever proven this.
I did have some busy night shifts when there was a full moon.
I mean this as a lighthearted thread, but I was just wondering about other peoples thought's on this.

Police officer and same.

However I think it's all anecdotal isn't it, I just googled and no research has ever proven a statistical link.

Now... Rain cuts crime.

Maybe it's just that the full moon means people are outside longer at night/ don't hurry home?

Maybe not... but in conjunction with rain reducing crime it's mildly plausible...

I work in a medical adjacent field and my boss attributes higher incidences of seizures/ epilepsy to the full moon, but I'm not convinced. In many women they do correlate to the menstrual cycle somewhat, and pre industrialisation/ electric lights supposedly there was more correlation between menstrual cycles and phases of the moon... bit of a stretch maybe!

The moon is responsible for tide movement and has a huge well documented effect on water. Humans are between 50 and 60% water so it makes sense that we are also affected by the moon. My husband was a GP and we always knew when it was a full moon! (There was also a noticeable difference in the psychiatric patients when he did that rotation in his training.)

Back before huge scale farming crops were planted and harvested depending on the phases of the moon. It's having a bit of a resurgence and is currently known as biodynamics. There's a lot of sense in it.

I don’t know but I’m in a great mood tonight

I’ve worked in education for donkeys years and it’s renowned that rain/wind affects behaviour, even if they still make it outside to run off steam, it’s still always a difference. Like the wind literally whips them up!

a relative has worked on dementia wards for years, and it’s renowned a full moon affects things there.

yet the studies never show any of this! I wonder why? It fascinates me

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere I’ve not heard the police version of rain, what’s the theory - the criminals don’t like getting wet?

Yes it's as simple as 'fewer pub fights when it's raining' 😂

I used to work in a busy city centre and we'd often hope 'PC Rain' would be on duty as it meant an easier shift come 9pm

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he is ok x

Thank you so much for asking. My son is 35 and also has dx of Bi Polar, Tourette’s and Epilepsy. He’s at home with me and a team of carers and between us we proved the 2-1 round the clock care he needs. People laugh when we say he’s affected by the full moon but it’s very much the case, he is more easily stressed and it’s more difficult to keep him comfortable and on an even keel. My son is the youngest of 5 and is well loved, he makes my heart sing actually, he’s also a happy young man for the most part despite everything.

We’re nearly all water . The moon controls the tides. Makes perfect sense it would have an effect.

TMI when I moved home the moon was directly in the toilet window at night I noticed that I was definitely more amorous 😳 during a full moon.

farmlass · 26/09/2026 21:19

Mum was a sen teacher and always said there was an effect some sort when the moon was full .
Also on a very windy day she said the kids would “compete “ with the wind

I find that in the days prior to a full moon my sleep is affected. Sometimes during that phase I lay awake all night - I feel wired and unable to sleep at all.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/09/2026 21:37

I have worked in the old asylums. Full moons meant people were more agitated.

SusanSHelit · 26/09/2026 21:39

I work nights on acute medicine and I've definitely noticed it being a bit mental around the full moon. Could just be confirmation bias though

shellyleppard · 26/09/2026 21:39

I used to work in a nursing home. The residents were extra lively when it was a full moon.
My old cat was charging round the house last night so yes....i do believe it affects people/animals

And fighting after closing time, everyone wants to scuttle off home not have a row.

The tidal pull of the full moon leads to a lot or pregnant women`s waters breaking. It’s always really busy in maternity during the full moon

Bless him, he sounds a nice man and i'm glad that he is happy. It's inspirational to me. I have been known to moan about silly things that don't matter.
It's interesting about how a full moon affects him. I hope he had an uneventful night last night.
I love your comment about him making your heart sing, that was lovely to read x

I thought there were lots of studies that showed that suicides were higher when its really windy

In terms of the full moon I have heard for decades that emergency personnel say that emergency services, police call outs are higher at a full moon yet people are saying there is no stats to support this, strange.
