I was thinking back to some of the odd jobs I worked as a student and young adult to scrape by, before landing my 'serious grown up' jobs. Some make for great stories.

Before I left to study my MA, I lived at home for 1 year to save up and worked as a fishmongers assistant (after a failed attempt at waitressing). I remember my friends saying 'wtf?' but I actually really enjoyed it 😂learning to gut and fillet fish was pretty interesting. I would do it again!

I also worked as a life model briefly. Lots of people ask me if it was empowering. It was mostly just really boring. Apart from the occasion when they hired 2 models and the other woman, who was nonchalantly day drinking carton wine, fell off her stool hammered and naked on to a nail in the floor. Usually there would be one retired old muso who made gushing comments like "you remind me of a pre-raphaelite muse" (bleurgh)

What amusing or unusual jobs have you previously worked?

Party decorator! So much fun.
Making and installing balloon arrangements, favours, streamers, bunting etc. pretty much anything except the flowers.

Not me but my friend had a job driving new cars around the massive hub at Avonmouth Bristol. She would be given the keys and then told to move a car from e.g space A29 to space M47. She didn't last long because it was winter and sometimes the vehicles were not on full working order, the heating, windscreen wipers didn't work.

I used to put holes in pork pies in a factory in Ruskington, no fancy tool, just a philips head screwdriver.

I worked as a chambermaid in a catholic religious retreat during the 90’s. Really old building that was quite spooky. I waitressed there too when they had big dinners. I met a lot of interesting people. I’m not catholic myself and found it all a bit strange there but it paid ok. I met cardinal basil hume on one big occasion who was desperate to watch a football match and instructed me to get a tv put in his room. I did and the next day he come to find me to reward my efforts, with toffee lol. He was a strange man who gave me the shivers.

Not the whole job, butvduring this summer, in my 40s, part of my job was taking mobility scooters to be charged at an event.
Which is done by driving them.

I hope i never need one. They are definetly not instinctive.

Not as unusual as some of these but spent a summer working the rides in a theme park. It was my first and last job working with the public for a reason, but I also learnt that the majority of theme park staff are students, training is minimal and while drinking alcohol while working was strictly forbidden a good proportion of them would be hung over. Fortunately I also learnt most rides have so many safety systems that they simply won’t start if the restraints aren’t down.
