What would you keep at home for a few days' emergency supplies?

Day off today and I’m doing a big clean/declutter of the house… and apparently I’ve decided to prepare for the apocalypse 😂

I’m a hope for the best but plan for the worst type of person, so while I’m sorting the house I thought I’d also get my emergency supplies organised.

So far I’ve got:

12L water
5 tins of soup
2 tins of tuna
16 toilet rolls
1 hand soap
1 shampoo
1 conditioner
1 tin of rice pudding 😂

What am I missing from my list?

I’m going to have a good search around the house first to see what I already have, then buy anything I’m missing.

I’m thinking food, water, toiletries, household stuff etc. Basically things that would be useful if we had a few days without being able to get to the shops.

What would you make sure you had? And what things have you got tucked away that you’d never normally think of? 😆

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

I am always looking for the 'loo' when visiting old castles. Not sure what that says about me.

It says you think you are royalty rather than a mere peasant who shat in a ditch.

I was without power for five days due to tornados when I was in the US in the South. Not relevant for us probably as likely to have catastrophies in winter, but leaving the hose pipe uncoiled in the sun gave hot water enough to bath my baby every night.

I was surprised how long the freezer contents stayed frozen. Lasted several days.

The strangest thing was the darkness everywhere at night. And the quiet as people just hunkered down inside.

Breadcat24 · 01/10/2026 15:21

If we start having a poo at the back of the border will the cat protest and stop pooing there? Or should we use it as an opportunity to deter the fox and just crap in the middle of the lawn like it does?

frozendaisy · 23/09/2026 11:55

In worse case scenario of no power/no water
torch
radio
batteries
water - rationed
cans of Coke Zero because caffeine is required and will need something except water and have teenagers
tinned fruit
crackers/oatcakes
long life milk and cereal
tinned fish
wine
nuts/seeds/honey
biscuits

I mean I would envision if power cut we would have some fresh stuff in like bananas anyway which would last because it would be cold

Would add wine, wine and more wine. More water and UHT milk. Tea bags.

Pepsi instead of the other. Loads of biscuits. 85% chocolate. Vitamins. Paracetamol and ibuprofen. Handwash gel. Wipes and clumping clay litter with a large bucket with lid.

Have kept the gas camping stove and the pots and kettle.

Haven't the slightest idea why @Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain would stock shampoo and conditioner.

@placemats because even if the shit hits the fan. I'm not living through it with greasy hair keeping hygiene standards is important to my family.

Well then you're going to need a lot more water.

You can get these which are handy. Outdoor solar shower bags

I've used them in the past and the water does get warm.

If the end is nuclear, don't use conditioner. Conditioner contains surfactants which are positively charged, they stick to negatively charged hair fibers to seal the cuticle, that's what makes your hair shiny and soft. However if your hair is covered in fine radioactive dust, the surfactants basically seal the radioactive particles in the crevices of the hair fibres and make it difficult to wash away, increasing your (and those near you) radiation dose.

On a slightly merrier note, I added christmas cake to my apoco-store. The end should be festive.

I think you need to add herbs and spices as there is no food on your prep. Plain bog roll will get repetitive for dinner on day 3. Add chilli power and you have flavour for eating and some entertainment when you wipe.

Your welcome.

I mean you could buy a single shed and put one of those portable loos in it but what about spiders 🤣 can you imagine the threads? Oh mumsnet there's spider Willys all over my emergency toilet

@Theotheron that sounds like a wild night!

Edited

We could do this but then the neighbours may know what we are up too in the shed and yes we have spiders here, false widows.

FindingMeno · 01/10/2026 23:40

I'm fortunately on a septic tank.
If not I would dig a long drop loo in the garden.
If I had no garden I'd make a contraption with a loo seat ( or buy one of those buckets with a loo seat), and store sawdust to use in it for poos, and use a separate bucket for wees.

IWishIWasASquirrel · 02/10/2026 08:55

Oh boy after wishing for years I had an integrated garage I think I might be glad the garage is detached.

I was imaging using it for boiling water on the gas camping stove when it's raining outside (with the door/window open for ventilation). Now I see I may have to use it as an outside toilet of sorts. I mean better that than in the house. If rubbish collection is affected because bin lorries are running short of diesel then imagine how bad the smell is going to get in people's gardens/sheds/garages. It's not pleasant.

The dog is rolling his eyes at all the drama. After all he's been shitting outside for years so............

My concern is that our septic tank needs electricity to “churn” occasionally. I don’t know how long it would last without being able to do this. Perhaps @pigletjohnmight be able to advise (please)

Bjorkdidit · 03/10/2026 09:00

Septic tanks in one form or another probably predate electricity so the question would be how was it done then.

Although, thinking about it, it probably involves something very unpleasant and dangerous that is ill advised or likely illegal if work related, ie, someone would have to enter to stir by hand (I get HSE bulletins at work and every so often there's a horror story about someone drowning in sewage).
