People seem to be forgetting how to just talk using normal phrases!

'I'm not gatekeeping anymore'
'These earrings/whatever are literally life changing'
'I can't with ...'
'I'm in my * era'

I'm so sick of hearing and reading shit like this. 🤣 Any others?

"I was today years old when I..."
"I did a thing"
"it's giving..."
Using the pronoun "she" to describe an inanimate object (that's not a ship)

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 22/09/2026 17:11

It's giving spending too much time on social media

BishyBarnyBee · 22/09/2026 17:13

It's just fashion, isn't it. We don't say jolly hockey sticks or spiffing any more, language has moved on. People hear a new turn of phrase and think it sounds a bit different, then suddenly everyone is using it and it's cringe. But it's exactly the same as any other fashion, just linguistic rather than clothing or styling.

OriginalUsername2 · 22/09/2026 17:19

I mostly enjoy it, I love words and language. Not to say things don’t make me cringe. I’ve been hearing “spenny” instead of expensive lately and I hate that one.

EscCtrl · 22/09/2026 17:30

Bare feels, but it is what it is.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 22/09/2026 17:32

I’m literally obsessed

Ironfloor269 · 22/09/2026 17:33

It’s giving low key cringe vibes.

belchingalong · 22/09/2026 17:35

language changes and evolves. It has since thd dawn of time. I don’t talk like my teens, I’d sound like an idiot if I did. But one day, they’ll be struggling to understand what their own kids are on about!

OrchardOwl · 22/09/2026 17:40

Each generation has their own vernacular, and the previous generation always hate it. It’s always the way.

Oh the 'she' thing to describe a dress, a bag, a blusher etc. Awful.

I work with teenagers.

Fie upon it! Mark you how language hath ever changed? By my troth, if it did not, we should all be speaking on this wise, like a company of mechanicals! Yet, soft! The world must onwards spin, though a pack of scurvy knaves cry out against it. For ever and a day, words shall shift and turn, as sure as the course of true love never did run smooth.

sugarandcyanide · 22/09/2026 18:09

Does anyone actually say these out loud? Seen loads of it on social media but not so much in real life!

Oh yes, I work with teenagers so I know.

Me too, I frequently have to ask them what they're on about. 🤣

Narcissist, glass/golden child, gaslighting, spotlighting, ghosting, ask (for request) invite (for invitation), lived experience, newborn bubble, taking my power (unless you're actually Supergirl).

Kingdomofsleep · 22/09/2026 20:12

I also teach teenagers and they do not talk to me like this. Maybe they know I'm too old and I'd need an interpreter

If I hear "wild" one more time..

Or "love that for you".... 😤😤😤

darkbyeight · 22/09/2026 20:48

Has anyone else had ‘kinda chic’?

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 22/09/2026 20:53

I use them back at the teens I work with straight faced, and sometimes a bit wrong, then, if corrected say "no judgement in the mandem bro".

The cringe is a good deterrent 😂😂

LlynTegid · 22/09/2026 20:58

I agree with the OP. Business phrases even worse as well. A deep dive should be consigned to a swimming pool or the sea, for example.

Q2C4 · 22/09/2026 21:15

Holding space…. On read…..gaslighting….😬

B1anche · 22/09/2026 21:50

How about a red lip, a wide legged jean or a white trainer? Especially when I'm out with 'this one'.

Apparently called « the fashion singular « !

Lowkey is winding me up at the moment
