What’s your comfort breakfast?

I’m feeling very woe is me. It’s my day off, but my hormones hate me, my PMDD is having a bad month, and I am curled up on the sofa with nausea, dizziness and cramps and basically full on body ache.

For lunch, I’m obviously going to have Heinz tomato soup with white toast and butter. But what comfort food can I have for breakfast? I don’t know what I fancy, and I don’t want to do too much as standing up makes my head spin. Could do with something slightly good for me so I can convince myself I’m doing everything and not just wallowing 😆

Smoked salmon, wilted spinach and a poached egg on a toasted English Muffin, potentially with a spoonful of hollandaise sauce if you have a supermarket that is upmarket enough to stock it.

Bacon and fried egg sandwich on thick white bread, sprinkle of Worcestershire sauce and a cup of tea.

Failing that, if time is short, thick white bread toast, lashings of quality salted butter, with marmite slathered all over. Must still be hot though…can’t stand lukewarm toast.

Oh everyone excellent suggestions so far! I am leaning towards eggs, but will decide after this second cup of tea DH has kindly brought me!

@cheezncrackers i know you’re right but I can’t face chicken at this point in my cycle 😭 and tomato soup is old school comfort food. If only we had lucozade in a glass bottle too!

In the summer its bacon lardons fried off in a pan, then throw in 2-3 eggs that have been whisked together with lots of black pepper. Keep stirring as the eggs cook and you get little bite sized omelette pieces with bacon in them.

In the winter I love hot spiced potatoes on a cold morning, it's makes me feel all cozy. I cook them the night before and leave them in the fridge in the marinade so they soak it all up, and just whack them in the air fryer to heat through and crisp up a bit.

Please can I have your potato recipe?

A bacon sandwich made with cheap white sliced bread with lots of butter - not margarine and ketchup. But probably no good to you if you are feeling nauseous. Hope you feel better soon, OP

Eggs on toast with brown sauce or failing that, marmite. Fruit juice if you have it. Hope you feel better soon.

Please can I have your potato recipe?

I started off making a bog standard bombay potato recipe from BBC and just trial and errored my way into a flavour I liked by trying different spice combos and ratios. Look for a non tomato based version - fakeaway versions tend to be non tomato such as this one

Basically, chop and boil some spuds like you are going to make roast potatoes (I often prep extras on a sunday when we do a roast), spice up some oil in a pan, coat the potatoes in the oil and let them sit in a tupperware tub of the oil overnight.

In the morning just tip the tub into an air fryer (with a liner!), pour the remaining oil over them and cook for 8-12 mins or until hot and crispy.

Easy Bombay Potatoes (Bombay Aloo)

Love the Bombay Potatoes you get at your local Indian restaurant? Well, now you can make them at home too, with this Easy Bombay Potatoes recipe!

So many things, most of which are very fattening!

Toast with my favourite home made jam.
Creamy porridge with a lot of golden syrup
Crumpets with a LOT of butter and golden syrup
Or my ultimate comfort breakfast... Full sugar Farleys rusks in hot milk, mixed really smooth with plenty of milk and then put into the microwave briefly until it thickens up a bit.

A gorgeous hotel breakfast buffet, can't be beaten and it should contain all of the above too! I know that's not practical for you OP, but it's the one thing I look forward to when getting out of Dodge. Hope you're feeling a bit better soon and manage to eat something lovely from all the great suggestions so far.

Warm pain aux raisin and a milky coffee. Crispy bacon and egg and mushrooms on a white roll, and a pot of tea. Made by DH.

Toast with lots of butter and vegemite. Easy, and salty. Bliss.

Damnloginpopup · 22/09/2026 18:04

Pizza

Beamur · 22/09/2026 18:04

Wholemeal toast, biscoff spread and banana
Crumpets and butter
Egg (any kind) on toast

Enuffnowtbh · 22/09/2026 18:09

Scrambled eggs with a pinch of mixed herbs, salt, pepper grated cheese plus mushrooms…only lightly scrambled ! Absolutely amazing on granary toast with a tonne of butter!

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 22/09/2026 18:10

Greek yogurt, with fresh fruit or compote, or prunes, maybe with a sprinkling of granola and chia seeds. Some really nice sourdough toast with butter and jam. I used to like the full English breakfast but I don't so much anymore, I'll have it occasionally in a hotel, I don't do it at home. Smoked salmon and some freshly made creamy, scrambled eggs, not the congealed type that I have been pre cooked and lying under a dome for ages. I did have some beautiful Kedgeree in one place we stayed at which I very much enjoyed. Finally, some really good coffee, hot milk with it please!

ginasevern · 22/09/2026 18:32

Two boiled eggs (with runny yokes), and thick proper white bread toasted with lashings of real butter with a bit of salt and white pepper on the side. Actually I could eat that any time.

Lessstressedhemum · 22/09/2026 18:36

Porridge with strawberries, blueberries, flax seeds and honey
Thick wholemeal toast with peanut butter and banana
Toasted pancakes with butter, fruit and maple syrup

Freeme31 · 22/09/2026 18:38

Croissant or boiled egg
