As my user name suggests.

My lovely husband suffered an accident at work earlier today and he’s partially lost the top of his thumb, down to the knuckle joint.

He currently undergoing surgery under general anaesthetic to try and reattach the joint and tissues. They’ve said it can take up to 8 hours. He’s 60, has high blood pressure and I’m so incredibly worried about the anaesthetic for that length of time. To me it would be safer for them to just amputate the top and be done with it. I need him to be ok.

We are meant to be moving house next week, just waiting on the contract to sign in the next few days. Not sure how it’s all going to pan out now.

Reassurance that general anaesthetic on older men with high BP will be ok, I’m terrified for him.

I'm not a doctor but he's in the very best hands. 60 isn't particularly old and I'm sure they deal with high blood pressure every single day.

Can you distract yourself for a bit? Maybe pack a bag for him if he's going to be kept in?

Hi OP

I'm sorry to hear this.

An anaesthetist reviews every patient prior to surgery and assesses any co-morbidities (like high BP) within the context of surgery and anaesthesia. If it was higher risk this would have been discussed.

It really is very safe Flowers

Obviously as you know, there are some risks, but honestly, doctors don't perform operations they don't expect patients to survive, for non life threatening injuries. If his age and BP was a big risk, they wouldn't be doing it.
