Tell me about Bath

I’m moving to Bath next year and I’d love some advice about where to live and how to meet people.

I’m 52, live alone and have no kids. I’ll be looking for a 2-bed place, ideally with some outside space. Doesn’t have to be a garden, but I’d like to be able to sit outside with a book, and my cat loves to go out for hours. Ideally I’d like to be able to walk to a nice cafe at lunchtime and get a coffee / have a change of scenery. Budget will be about £350-380k. Which areas would suit me?

I also wfh so need to create a social life. I like:

  • books
  • swimming
  • films
  • theatre
  • history
  • museums
  • galleries

thanks in advance!

Why Bath? You'll get more for your money, and more of everything you like, in Bristol?
Sorry. I'm sure you have good reason to move to Bath, it's just I'd definitely pick Bristol with those interests and that budget.

I much prefer Bath to Bristol

I just prefer Bath. Maybe it’s the size, maybe it’s because it reminds me a lot of Edinburgh (where I’m from)

Oldfield Park or Morefields areas would be a good place to start looking, Moorland Rd has good shops & cafes, it’s within walking distance to the city centre, everywhere around Bath will have students living now that the University has grown massively. My home town was Bath until my unexpected divorce, Weston where the Royal United Hospital is is very traffic congested,
Combe Down, Odd Down, are all areas I have close ties to, although they are a bus ride into town if you live there ,Car parking is horrendous in most districts, especially in the city, recent cycle lanes everywhere has not helped the traffic problems.

Where will you be working?

I think Twerton could suit you, it has a high street with a good range of shops, you'll get a decent house with a garden for your budget, it's walkable to the city centre, or one stop from the station, and it's slightly less studenty than other areas near to the city centre

Bath has everything you like - brilliant independent book shops like Topping & Company/Mr B’s Emporium that run lots of events & book groups, fantastic theatre, museums etc always something new to do.

I’ve lived in Clifton, Bristol & grew up in Bath and would definitely choose Bath.

Larkhall, Weston, Batheaston, Newbridge/Chelsea Rd are all nice, have their own communities, cafes etc but easy to get into the center by bus/walking.

Have a look at their local community/village halls to see what regular classes/activities they do as that’s a great way of meeting local people.

For your budget you could get a nice 2 bed terrace in those areas

When Rock ‘n’ Roll came to britain – a personal perspective – Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution

Bill Smarme takes a light-hearted, irreverent musical look at the coming of rock and roll music to these shores in the 1950s; its energising impact on the youth of the time and one impressionable teenager in particular. Both American and British rock ’...

I would suggest you look for a property with off road parking as a necessity, you can always rent it out if you don’t have a vehicle.
