How can I identify the artist of a cover track?

Not sure if this is the right place for my query, but if anyone can help I'd be really very grateful.

I'm trying to find the artist for a music track I have. The track is a sort of metal ballad cover of Kate Bush's masterpiece, Running Up That Hill. Its a male solo, he has a raspy kind of voice, and I absolutely love it. I just don't know who it is. I would like to know, firstly to acknowledge the artist, secondly to see what else they've done that I might like.

There is no metadata on the track so unable to trace through any info that way. And I don't know where to upload it to, to see if even AI recognises the artist. Also, it seems that in order even just to post on most forums to ask about it, I'd have to register and open an account and I really don't want accounts all over the place.

Has anyone ever tried to find an artist rather than a song title, and been successful? If so, how did you do it?

TIA

In what format is the music track you have? How did you get it and where from? That might provide a clue.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 18/08/2026 17:28

Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro did a great cover.

Dandeloosha · 18/08/2026 17:29

Shazam it - it will usually pick up the different version.

Jimmy Jorgansen?

Came on to suggest Placebo

There's rather a lot of info about cover versions of it and who did them on Wikipedia, including details of some American metal artists.

Ilmiopinguino · 18/08/2026 17:32

Allmusic.com list a lot of covers of it. You could try going through those. Hope you track it down.

The song’s Wikipedia page has a list of all cover versions

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running_Up_That_Hill

Also be aware that a huge number of cover bands and artists exist (including many amateurs), so it is possible that it was never officially released. A lot of bands and individuals post clips of themselves playing songs on youtube, so it may be on there somewhere.

That's why I asked how you came to have this copy. Where did you get it from?

(DH is a musician and gets songwriting royalties from time to time)

Can you use Shazam?

EmeraldRoulette · 18/08/2026 17:41

Actually Placebo is more likely than Loveless because you’d easily be able to find metadata for the latter

DeepBluePanda · 18/08/2026 17:46

Thanks to all. Someone just identified it for me and its Colm R. McGuinness, whom I've never heard of. Prior to hearing his version, I loved (and still love) Placebo's. Thanks to all responders.

I thought it wouldn't be the Placebo version, if you like deep cuts of covers, try the futureheads meet me halfway way, ben howard call me maybe and james blunt forever
