Adjusting to wearing glasses full-time after problems with contact lenses

I might have to give up wearing contacts as my eyes are just so dry. I have special eye drops, it keep getting a sty. I’m moving to dailies to see if it helps, but Optician doesn’t seem hopeful.

I find wearing glasses such an inconvenience and faff. Biggest things that annoy me:

  • sunglasses. If I have prescription ones I have to carry them all the time and constantly switch between glasses and sunglasses, in and out of buildings, sun goes in etc. I don’t carry a handbag ever, phone and keys in pocket person. I have adhd and find remembering to take things I need with me difficult.
  • running- I hate running in glasses, I wear a cap if really sunny. Find I am really aware of them on my face. and when it rains. I do a lot of hiking and being outdoors, glasses are shit when it rains.
  • vanity. I don’t take much effort over appearance- I wear hardly any make up, but I do wear mascara and eyeliner, especially on the odd occasion I want to look nice. I feel weird wearing glasses with a nice dress for a wedding for example. My eyes are nicest part of my face and feel like you can’t see them.

Then there is having to swap them for readers, as my short sight fails too.

Anyone got to grips with wearing glasses all the time. I know it isn’t the biggest deal in the world. The sunglasses things drives me particularly nuts.

I have always worn glasses all the time, I’ve never been able to wear contacts for more than a couple of hours so pretty much since I was 6 I’ve been a full time glasses wearer. Very short sighted. You get used to it. It’s important to find frames you like and that are comfortable. I’ve never worn sunglasses, I tried prescription ones once but I didn’t like the feeling of not being able to see properly. I wear a hat instead in the sun. You can buy cocoons which are built to fit over your glasses. I don’t have any but know someone who does and likes them.
It’s annoying when I open the oven and briefly can’t see as they steam up or when they get dirty or rained on but no worse than other vaguely annoying life stuff! Prescription goggles made swimming much easier for me.
I wear a little bit of eye makeup, I feel like if I don’t then my eyes look very small, especially having a high prescription.
I don’t run so can’t help you there!
Good luck!

I know it is very much a first world issue/non-problem. Not sure why I am getting so annoyed by it.

I have some of those cocoon sunglasses, but then I never know where to put them when I take them off- like to go into a building! I think probably not carrying a bag around with me is a big issue. I’m also supposed to carry some medication with me, which I don’t usually because I don’t take a bag anywhere! It nags make me feel encumbered somehow!

Sympathy, I'm a lifelong contact lens wearer and HATE it if I have to wear glasses for more than a few hours.

Sunglasses - you could try the reactions ones that change colour, but I have no experience of them myself.

Running - my friend wears a cap when it's raining to keep hers dry

Readers - varifocals

Vanity - this one's a problem, I'm so short sighted I cannot put on eye make-up without my contacts because I have to hold the mirror so close to my nose I can't get my hand in the gap. Do you think you could manage dailies for a few hours occasionally for smart occasions? I don't feel properly dressed till I've got my contacts in in the morning so if I had to go somewhere dressed up but in glasses I would feel scruffy even if objectively I'm not, it's just the "first thing in the morning only" association with wearing glasses.

I am also an avoider of bags, at the most I carry one of those small Uniqlo ones

This my long term worry too. The thought of walking or running in the dark and rain with glasses gives me the willies. I will feel so vulnerable.

Yup, Decathlon waterproof cap for running and hiking in the rain keeps the water off my glasses.

I also have a couple of pairs of cheap, colourful glasses I bought online for when I want to look a bit different or have a different colour for a particular outfit.

I have one pair that has the transition lenses. I don't love them but they're handy for not having to take two pairs sometimes.

Also, once your eyes have settled maybe you might be able to use lenses again for a few hours for parties etc.? I use Aqua Dailies Plus from time to time (sports sometimes, nights out) for max 4-6 hours and the optician always says from my eyes that it looks like I never use them.

I have reactive glasses and if I'm going to be outdoors wear those all day. They're not perfect in that they can be a bit slow to change back when you go indoors, but better than carrying a spare pair.

I find I can wear contacts for running if I keep them just for running.

I am very short sighted, and since I am no longer young I need to wear varifocals. I can attach magnetic sunglasses onto my normal glasses so no need to keep swapping glasses over. They look something like this. They are small enough to slip in my pocket, as like the OP I don't like to carry a handbag. I have a spare that I keep in the car as well. They are brilliant for driving as it is so easy to remove them if I am driving through the Tyne tunnel for example or when the sun goes in.

I don't like reactolite glasses as they don't change quickly enough and they still retain a slight tint in dimmer light, which is no good for me.

No advice but lots of sympathy. I hate my glasses. I feel old and scruffy with my glasses out of the house. Good luck!

Varifocials with reactors is what have. I work outside rain doesn't bother me. I can see fine

Even in heavy drizzle and rain? I run/walk in all weather and when I’ve worn glasses they quickly get covering in rains drops. I’ll have to see if a cap would help that.
