Booking.com scam

I've used Booking.com probably 100s of times, both in UK and abroad. We are away most weekend during summer and do 2-3 short breaks somewhere warm in the winter.

This is the first time I've ever had a problem, but it's making me nervous for future trips.

We booked a flat in a UK city for 2 nights. When we booked it was a new property with no reviews, but it was a good location for the event we were going to and a good price, so we decided someone needs to be first and probably that was the reason it was cheap. Booked a year ago because we expected accomodation to get more expensve/be in short supply becuase of the event. Lessons learned.

We arrived to find the lockbox that was supposed to have the key wasn't there. Other residents told us they weren't supposed to have Airbnb type arrangements and the building manager removed the boxes when he sees them, although lots of people do.

We tried to contact the owner. No answer or response to messages. We contacted Booking.com who said they'd try and contact, they had no luck. We said we'd just cancel then, but they said they have to give the owner 30 min to respond.

By this point we were getting tight for time for the event that was the purpose of the trip, and thankfully on this occasion we had the car, so were able to book a reasonably priced Travelodge a few miles out. We've since had a message to say they weren't able to make contact and the booking will be refunded. So, all's well that ends well, but it did make the trip quite stressful and could have been much worse if we'd been on public transport, as we often are for city breaks, or in an unfamiliar country.

Having looked back at the lisiting, there are multiple reviews since we booked, that make it clear this a scam (yes, with hindsight should have checked), so Booking.com knew, they knew they had our booking and didn't contact to let us know/cancel/rebook.

Is there any point complaining about that? Would you? What would you expect the outcome to be?

Or Airbnb or VRBO, or have you had bad customer service from them too?

I haven't had poor service from Airbnb, but have always found the properties disappointing.

I don't like that site, I've seen too much poor press. I've told DH but he still gravitates towards it. Recently he booked a room in a hotel for our ds (20). Ds paid at the time. Ds then received a very, very well done scam email a few days before asking for his details for advance check in. It then asked for his card details and sent him around in circles. It took around £50 then tried to take £300 at which point he realised he'd been scammed. Thankfully his bank have immediately blocked his card and refunded him.

It was very well done done, a good clone and knew the hotel he was booked for and the dates.

I have never had a bad vrbo or Airbnb.

I have never had a bad vrbo or Airbnb.

My experience of using Airbnb is that people tend to give very high ratings. So if a property has anything other than a really high rating, I would be cautious.

We had this on 1st August in Alnwick. Reviews were fine except some saying hot water was hit and miss. Not too much issue. We had showers that morning. Were there for a very low key music concert and we only live half an hour away. Was even a review the day before saying all fine. That was obviously made up! Got there. They weren't even renting rooms out! Hadn't been for weeks as no upstairs electrics. Said they'd asked booking.com to remove their listing. I queried why they didn't remove or change it themselves! Furious was an understatement. Sitting in the middle of the street with our overnight bags and 1.5 hours before our meet and greet we found a room in a Premier Inn. Extra 101.50. 15 minute walk away. Booking.com agreed to cover that after I got through to them. And also gave us a refund. Sent them our payment details and they refunded that within 2 days. Have booked with them since and will again. But it was such a hassle and so infuriating.

I used booking.com for years with no issues at all. But in the last 2 years I've had so many issues that I've given up using them now. I still use it as a handy map search, but then I book direct.

I was just looking on booking.com for a trip to london and spotted some flats that looked like scams. One was a flat claiming to actually bevin portculis house, which is a government building so obviously not accurate. I did a reverse image search and found the same flat on another site. Seemed to be quite a few scam listings.
