Finally got there.

I know, 'read the room', 'dont you know there is a cost of living crisis' etc etc.

But after 35 years of having a mortgage, we have finally paid ours off. No windfall or inheritence just steady slog.

We havent always been the wisest financially speaking. Spent when we should have saved sometimes. But I feel we have finally got something to show for all the work and occasional modestly good decisions.

Fantastic. Isn’t it a wonderful feeling. Congratulations

Incredulousaboutlife · 17/08/2026 07:04

Well done OP.
It must be a brilliant feeling to finally own your home.
Enjoy!

YosoyEduardo · 17/08/2026 07:06

Bet that feels great. Good for you!

Well done!

I’m there with you this year too! Never got a cent from anyone and the 2 of us have just slogged at jobs to FINALLY pay off our mortgage, just in time for retirement.
It’s a great achievement, isn’t it - congratulations.

GnomeDePlume · 17/08/2026 07:18

Thank you!

It doesnt feel anything, yet. It's a bit like going on a long journey, getting to the destination and thinking 'well, yes, here we are then, this was where we were headed and we got here'.

No bunting, no marching band, no one to wrap us in foil blankets.

Most properly grown up things seem to be a bit ho hum when you get to them!

Congratulations @GnomeDePlume and @ChangedWhoIWas! It's harder now than it was then generally, of course, but it's a big deal and a massive achievement. DH and I got on to the housing ladder in the 90s. I started off with my ex, then had to buy him out, and that was only doable on a good single income because the property value wasn't ridiculous. Then met DH and sold up and bought together further out because prices had started to jump up, paid extra every month. Finally paid off mortgage this year.

PatioDwellers · 17/08/2026 07:21

Paying ours off this year. Both 58. It’s a nice feeling.

Mydogisagentleman · 17/08/2026 07:25

Congratulations 🎊

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/08/2026 07:25

We made the final payment in June this year. Felt like a weight off, but I didn't feel as celebratory as I'd expected. Now all I can think about is retirement, but I'm still 20 years from state pension age so jumping the gun a bit...

Ilikewinter · 17/08/2026 07:25

Congratulations OP !!! We're still chained to our mortgage, but are overpaying as much as we can. Current predictions have dropped the mortgage from 11 years to 7 ...... cant bloody wait!

FatLarrysBanned · 17/08/2026 07:35

Well done @GnomeDePlume 👏🏻

It does feel like a bit of an anti climax. When I paid my final payment last year (overpaying with no inheritance/windfall) the lovely man at Nationwide said "Well done Mrs FatLarrysband" and that was it. No one else knows. Single parent with one DD and I bloody did it all myself after remortgaging to buy out ExDH out which was a big bump in the road.

The rewards come next month when you can start putting your mortgage payments into savings.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/08/2026 07:38

It’s a great feeling isn’t it @GnomeDePlume. I burst into tears when inside ours of! Congratulations. DH and I earnt every penny, alongside paying for every minute of childcare we ever needed above the funded 3+ hours.

Now you can put money into your pension!

Serenity75 · 17/08/2026 07:38

Congratulations, it is a good feeling, especially as you don’t even get a bundle of deeds anymore, just a letter from the bank and then a few months later a change in the land registry sight. It is nice not to have to make that payment though!

KingscoteStaff · 17/08/2026 07:45

We will finish ours this time next year - the same month we pay our youngest DC’s final university money! That will be a massive change!

GnomeDePlume · 17/08/2026 07:45

Yes, the mortgage payment will be going into savings for the rest of this year then will be going into AVCs for the next couple of years. DH has just retired and I will be retiring in a couple of years.

I remember my parents paying theirs off and their quality of life immediately went from struggling to having the money to have meals out and holidays. I’m sure it’s a great feeling to be free of debt and to own your home outright.

Iliketulips · 17/08/2026 07:57

Congratulations, OP. It's so nice to get it cleared. Even better when you have extra money for saving a d building money up so you know you can relax when you have unexpected house and car repairs. Enjoy.
