Weirdest trolley contents you’ve seen at the checkout

DH and I doing a quick supermarket shop yesterday and ended up behind a lady (who looked a bit eccentric) at the checkout whose basket contained approx a dozen tinned peaches, about half a dozen bags of crumble topping and 10 jars of salad cream 😂

We thought maybe she’d got confused between custard and salad cream, but she was chatting to the checkout lady telling her she was going to Portugal where apparently they don’t sell tinned peaches, salad cream or crumble topping (the last one I get, but such random items, and a lot of them to boot!).

I mean I’ve seen probable cafe owners buy a lot of bread or baked beans but this was something else.

A cucumber
A tub of Vaseline
Cling film

After I gave birth I sent my partner to the supermarket for laxatives and vasaline. He said he got a few weird looks.

A full trolley, half of it was cans of beer and half was yellow sticker lettuce.

I once saw a man buying 6 tins of soup, a bread loaf and 2 bottles of whiskey.

I was once behind two young men, probably early twenties in the supermarket at about 10pm. The only item they were purchasing was a piñata. Who purposely leaves the house to shop at 10pm with the sole purpose of buying a piñata?

My nocturnal husband was baking the other night before we were visiting family the next day (a good drive away). Apparently he rushed to the petrol station at about 2am to buy double cream 😂 must have looked like an absolute nutter

Typical Scotsman.

🤭 Only joking! 🫣

beeble347 · 16/08/2026 22:40

Also, can't fathom why anyone would ever want to buy salad cream 🤢

I was taking my daughter and her pony to a horse show one weekend and had left it too late to buy proper horse products so had to do a supermarket trip for non horse equivalents. The lady on the checkout did actually raise her eyebrows at me when I bought:

A jar of Vaseline
A bottle of lavender Dettol
A bottle of Johnstons baby oil
A car washing sponge
Washing up liquid
Rubber gloves
And 2 bags of carrots!

Berlinlover · 16/08/2026 22:46

I’ve worked on a supermarket checkout for several years, I don’t find anything strange, maybe I did in the beginning.

ilovepixie · 16/08/2026 22:49

I once served a man buying a banana, baby oil and a pair of rubber gloves!

bitontheobtuse · 16/08/2026 22:49

@DrMaryMalone 😂

I was behind a man in Asda one Christmas, he had two trolleys - one full of alcohol, the other full of cat food!
I still haven't decided whether he had a liking for cat food or lots of alcoholic cats...🤣

😆Naughty kitty !

A couple of months ago, around the time there was a sudden mackerel shortage, I was in Lidl and the person in front of me was buying 48 tins of mackerel. The cashier kept counting them wrong and having to start again.😁

BlackeyedSusan · 16/08/2026 22:59

Sainsbury's there are three products that I prefer from there so occasionally will drive over and bulk buy those.

Surely a half brick, à la Rincewind, would be much easier?! 🤣

But with the melon you can eat the evidence afterwards...

You've really thought about this! 😁

There was a Cadbury Drinking Hot Chocolate shortage about 2 years ago. I drove around the County buying it up! 🙄😂😋 🍫

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/08/2026 23:54

Not in the supermarket but in a charity shop.
The man in front of me at the till was buying a pair of stiletto shoes. Apparently, according to the salesperson, he was a regular customer who came in to the shop daily and bought a pair of ladies shoes every time without checking the size.
Ewww!

I can appreciate a love for shoes. Not sure it's the same type of love as him though! 😂

Don't know as I don't tend to look in people's baskets or take note.

PluviophileinRaintown · 17/08/2026 06:06

Never seen crumble tipping here, sadly crumble seems to be quite unknown in Pt. Tinned peaches and mayo are certainly available. Not sure about the salad cream though.

StarlightLady · 17/08/2026 06:11

A box of condoms, a bottle of champagne and a box of Imodium. That’s all folks!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 17/08/2026 06:26

I once saw a woman buying loads of cat food and chicken breasts.
As a joke I asked her if she was running an owl sanctuary. She said Yes! 😁

notwittywithusernames · 17/08/2026 06:39

I used to work the late evening shift in a supermarket. One chap came through the till near 11pm, many cucumbers, baby wipes, moisturiser and bin bags. I didn't judge..
