it's in the prettier tin Confused

we just had sibling & their family staying (love them, love having them, glad they left...)

turns out my relative's raging headache was due to caffeine withdrawal. the spouse prepared their Brew and because the tin we store decaff is 'prettier' they only took from that tin.

what silly little amusing things do your guests come up with?

I feel their pain, my parents switched to decaf without telling me (the coffee lives in a tub so no label!).

Frendslikethese · 16/08/2026 16:30

we had builders in who wouldn’t drink the tea my husband made. I discovered it was because he found a jar containing ‘sugar’ and sweetened their tea with this. Not realising that it was MSG that a Chinese friend had left here.

bitontheobtuse · 16/08/2026 16:30

At least they weren't eating the dog biscuits, which happened to a friend of mine many years ago when they went to stay with an elderly relative who kept their dog's treats in a biscuit barrel.

Our salt lives in the sugar jar because no one here takes sugar. A visitor once made about 6 cups of tea for his sweet toothed family liberally sweetened with salt…
I get a lack of caffeine headache too.

When I was a teenager we went to a cafe and I ordered burger and chips. When it arrived I sprinkled salt liberally all over the chips from the big shaker on the table. Unfortunately it wasn't salt, it was sugar. My family thought it was very funny. I didn't. Nearly 50 years on and I am still miffed. (Never did it again, though. Some things are so important you only need to be told once.)

My dad and sister did something similar at a concert, @user85642879067. Usually mum policed how much sugar they were allowed (just one teaspoonful, no more), but she wasn’t at the concert, so they loaded in several spoonfuls, but they’d put out salt instead of sugar. I had just given up sugar in my coffee, so was rather smug.

beigetriangle · 16/08/2026 17:26

the tins are not labelled but I told them which is which (light colour = decaf dark = normal)
visitor just thinks the design of the decaf is prettier.

other visitors we had didn't like the bedding we have so went out to buy new bedding.

Dear visiting friend of mine who had a kind heart, but almost zero experience of cooking decided to 'help' me, after I'd mentioned I was cooking a risotto for us in the evening.

She's an early riser, so got up at 5am, tugged out my rice cooker for 'prep', overloaded it with water and sushi rice (yes! She thought all rice was rice!), set it going and almost started an electrical fire after it burst open.

Needless to say, she is currently banned from my kitchen when visiting.

But I did make a cracking risotto that night!

beigetriangle · 16/08/2026 17:46

we also have visitors who like to cook for us as a 'thank you' using up all herbs and spices, needing all pots, pans, bowls and leaving it all to clean up to us.

ah, families Halo

They would be horrified if they ever visited my caffeine-free house!

My family came to visit and set about getting cups out and the kettle boiled... and then realised that my tea/coffee/sugar/biscuit tins were all full of sugar! (I am into baking, and had a huge bag of sugar that had leaked, so I obviously stored it in the first empty things that came to hand).

Within a few hours, they also find the quietness unnerving (it's rural, surrounded by sheep, and I don't have a television) and isolating, because a trip to the shop means that you have to drive there. Oh, and it is too dark at night (no street lights) and clearly unsafe because pavements are a bit hit and miss around here. They do not understand how I manage to live so far from "civilisation"!

@beigetriangle did I read that right? Your guests sent you out to buy more bedding as they didn’t like what you provided in their free accommodation?

I recently mistook sugar for salt in a cafe. I started to sprinkle sugar on my fries, then I realised my mistake. I just styled it out and actually the fries tasted really good!!

My mother when I was making coleslaw with kenwood chef. Apparently the cabbage would taste woody. I left her and MIL to assemble a Victoria sandwich. Needed detailed instructions but it kept them entertained for an hour.

@beigetriangle but new bedding smells all chemical-y & needs a wash before first use! What didn’t they like about your bedding? Just the design, or the fabric/weight, or…? In any event, that’s just rude!

Livingthebestlife · 16/08/2026 18:36

Oh I recognise those tins 😂😂😂

Only joking, I have though gone out and bought new bedding one time and took it home with me but that was because the bedding was dirty on the bed and smelt of animals and there was only one shop near and the bedding they sold was limited and very expensive so thought fuck it I'm taking this home with me, I've paid for it and it was nice.
