Three year old won’t eat breakfast

DD age 3 has never been the best eater but breakfast has become a real issue.

She actually ate brilliantly yesterday (for her) but completely refused breakfast, so her first food of the day was at midday.

I am torn between leaving her to it and wondering what else I can try. Any thoughts? She starts preschool in September and so I am a bit worried about her going in without any food,

Leave her to it. Unless she’s underweight or lacking in energy, you dont need to force feed her

i believe that children eat intuitively. My kid eats tonnes some days and hardly anything the next

top tips: vary breakfast each day. Greek yogurt, peanut butter on toast. Food they can pick at like
fruit and crumpet or toast.

offer it and them to it and dont make an issue out of it

I dont agree with offering unhealthy stuff like milkshakes, cereal, etc

if they’re hungry, they will eat. No point forcing it

When she’s in those sorts of moods you just get repeated ‘no, no, nos’. She doesn’t really have a lot of foods she’ll safely eat tbh.

The only fruit she’ll eat are strawberries, melon and banana but not reliably - it’s not like I can always give her strawberries to munch on, it’s only if she wants strawberries. Won’t entertain apple or grapes or pear.

The only veg she’ll eat is broccoli and she’ll have onion and tomato in a sauce. Won’t eat cucumber or peas - she used to eat both these but now refuses.

She eats chicken and mince beef so I can make a roast dinner and chilli and spaghetti bolognaise. She’ll eat noodles so I can do a stir fry. Mealtimes are a challenge! 😅

three year olds are control freaks.

My youngest was like this and still has food issues now he’s older. What we would do is put out bowls of strawberries, berries, chop up cereal bars, grapes, yoghurt pouches etc. We didn’t demand he ate breakfast but the options were there on the table. He would graze on what we left out whilst going about his business. He was awful for sitting at the table and being told to eat, he isn’t hungry when he gets up either. He’s always been on the go and fidgets (waiting for ADHD assessment) so eating on the go without the demand worked wonders and he would eat a lot.

You can buy paediatric milk drinks packed with the essential vitamins and minerals she needs. She may just be a person that doesn't like to eat before lunch. She wont starve herself, im pretty sure if she was hungry she would eat. Don't force the issue as it may turn into a bigger problem you dont need. Just accept it for now and replace her normal milk with the paediatric milk you can buy in boots. They do yummy vanilla and strawberry. You could always speak to her doctor too as im sure you can get some products on prescription. It wont be forever either, it's probably just a phase she is going through but remember she wont starve herself and dont make an issue of it in front of her either.
