Barbecues and fire pits-anyone else astounded by the stupidity of their neighbours today?

Our neighbours have lit a barbecue. A moveable fire pit type one. They’ve used lighter fluid. There’s thick smoke. We are asthmatic and our washing was out and all the neighbours windows are open so not great to start with but fucking hell, how stupid do you have to be? Their grass is straw. Their fence which adjoins my house is so dry and old it’s breaking apart. The gardens are tiny. Complete and utter fuckwits. we live where there have been wildfires burning up on the moors for weeks and still they think it’s a good idea to have open flames. The mind boggles as my late dad would have said.

Just here for a moan really.

And people think that emergency alert was unnecessary.

Pinklightning · 15/08/2026 19:35

They’ve actually placed it on their straw-grass too rather than anywhere that’s not likely to catch fire.

FFS I’d have to tell them

Have you actually spoken to them?

Because speaking to Mumsnet isn't likely to prevent a fire spreading to your home.

Error404FucksNotFound · 15/08/2026 19:40

No matter how stupid you think someone is, they will always surprise you.

There's a thread on here about how unnecessary the alert was because it's not a big deal apparently.

Pinklightning · 15/08/2026 19:41

We don’t speak. Plus I’m
not going out there and risking being admitted to hospital with an asthma attack.

Get your hose out, and dampen everything in your garden just in case a spark comes your way.
If you just so happen to splash them over the fence so be it.

HoraceCope · 15/08/2026 19:43

put your hose on them

Summersorcherisjustsummer · 15/08/2026 19:44

Call the fire bridge op they will triage you/ keep an eye

HoraceCope · 15/08/2026 19:48

i dont think calling the fire brigade is a good use of resources on a just in case scenario

chaosmaker · 15/08/2026 19:56

I'd have called the police to talk to them, isn't it illegal atm?

Pinklightning · 15/08/2026 20:07

No illegal, no, just “not advised”.
Thankfully the smoke and flames have died down, despite them
wafting something at it, and hopefully no harm will be done.

I’ve just spoken to my neighbours. They’ve stink my whole house out plus they’ve lit it right by their oil tank. Absolute morons.

chaosmaker · 15/08/2026 20:10

Problem is they don't just blow themselves up, usually get away scot free from the resulting devastation caused by their moronic actions.
Think I'd still log it with 111? or whatever the non emergency police number is

Its the people that its aimed at that usually don't take any notice 😕

Lots won’t but there are enough that will that will prevent at least a few wildfires. And as many as we can prevent the better.

chaosmaker · 15/08/2026 20:58

chuck em on the fire, i say! Cause and effect

Imgoingoutforawhile · 15/08/2026 21:09

I wonder if it’s worth phoning the non emergency police line and getting some advice?
