This is a headline from The Times today. Fascinating reading (sorry, its behind a paywall)! Some seriously deluded chaps out there...

Although I might be good at winter olympics still?

Bobsleigh? Surely a fat lady wedged into the front of the sleigh, whilst some bloke runs and pushes it off would be helpful? I imagine I'd hurtle down that track...

Mt563 · 14/08/2026 18:35

O to have the confidence of a mediocre white man

LynetteScavo · 14/08/2026 19:28

I’m convinced I’d be really good at the luge. I’ve never tried it, but if I did….

WhatAMarvelousTune · 14/08/2026 19:37

2028? That’s quite soon. Bit too ambitious.

I think that if I had the time to do it as a full time job, and the resources to get the best coach, I could probably be decent at shooting by 2032. I reckon that applies to most people. Practice is never going to make me a sprinter. I think a lot of practice could make plenty of people a decent shot.

I like the videos where they ask men if they could be a female professional athlete in x sport, its always satisfying to see them fail miserably.

mondaytosunday · 14/08/2026 19:43

It’s same as how 90% of men think they could pull Claudia Schiffer (or whoever is the current equivalent).

SadiraOfTyr · 14/08/2026 19:44

There’s a hilarious video somewhere on YouTube where men and women in a gym are challenged to see how long they can maintain Keely Hodgkinson’s 800 pace on a treadmill (so no air resistance). All fit, young gym bunnies, not average Brits at all. I think the best one (a bloke) lasted about 40 seconds. None of them had any unrealistic expectations though.

Well, you have to be able to steer while undergoing up to 5g of compression in the turns - you literally weigh 5x your usual weight and have to learn a special breath hold technique to stop you blacking out and your neck snapping like a dry twig. Weight does help but it needs to be muscle not fat, otherwise you won’t fit in the sled.

Unlikely claims from a 'study behind a paywall.
Maybe we should fo a study on what percentage of womem are stupid enough to believe it

JulesJules · 14/08/2026 19:58

This was hilarious

My only chance with shooting is aiming for a static target and randomly hitting a clay pigeon Grin

This thread reminds me; was there an update on the sub-2hr half-marathon husband that struggled with a 35min 5k?

It's a version of the men vs lion bullshit. They just believe because of the patriarchy that they are far more powerful and important than they are. Bless them.

I have known a couple of Olympians in less known sports and they still train all the time.

Was on a safari holiday years ago and a guy there believed he could take down a Cheetah as it was the lightest of the big cats. Same guy on a game drive asked what would happen if got out of the jeep (theme developing here). We were next to a pride of sleeping lions. The warden said it wasn't advisable and she clicked the door handle. Those sleeping lions were on point faster than you could blink. They heard an odd noise so was it a threat or food? You wouldn't want to find out. Surprised it's only 40%.Some of them probably hope they can take the controls of a passenger jet after the crew are incapacitated and land it safely to a hero's welcome

Years ago some nobody believed he could beat Navratilova with a frying pan. That would be one of the greatest tennis players of all time then. He didn't.

Isn't there a statistic of how often men think they could have lived in Ancient Rome as a gladiator or Emperor?

The Times report on Youtube

The Mirror

The Sun

It’s reported as nearly four in ten men, or just over a quarter of adults.

These are the first three of the first eight links my internet search gave me.

@LilyOfTheValley25 .

DontBotherJustChooseYourself · 16/08/2026 17:50

What a bunch of clowns.

I suspect that an awful lot of women who have ever dated men, or been married to at least one, are not in the slightest bit surprised. I know I am not.

Buggabootwo · 16/08/2026 21:44

There was a similar study about American men who believed that a couple of years intensive practise was all that stood between them and lifting the trophy at the US Open.

And that is the entire basis of the sporting goods industry! The entire marketing strategy is based on the notion that if you buy just one more bat/racquet/club/ball/shoes/etc, that will be the key that unlocks your hitherto unknown talent. They also firmly believe that attending major events in hospitality instead of regular seats marked them out as specially dedicated and could be part of what gets them noticed.

God bless these men, I am in sports marketing and they have paid my mortgage!

I reckon if you gave me enough money to buy a really posh horse and I could practice all the time - I could get to the Olympics for dressage.

You couldn't. Not unless you are already a very proficient dressage rider with experience at Grand Prix level. A poor rider will ruin even the greatest horse - look at what happened with Edward Gal's horse Totilas.

I definitely can't do that!

You've crushed my dreams @SadiraOfTyr . Clearly I was correct to let go of the hope that I would one day win an Olympic medal...😁
