Sitting here stressing about ds18 on travels to Egypt, passport mistake

Ds is currently traveling, he is abroad and waiting to board a flight to Egypt. He is expecting to purchase visa on arrival. His luggage is checked in and he has his boarding pass.

I've just seen his passport has less than 6 months validity, currently 5 months and a day or two. Only realised when I was searching price of visa that the passport according to Google needs to be 6 months off expiry. He is traveling to Turkey after and that's 150 days validity so think we got confused when booking, it was all last minute. I haven't travelled to anywhere you need a visa ever and didn't think of this as a issue.

There is nothing to be done, I haven't told him as it will just stress him out and don't know if he will have reception. I'm sitting here waiting to see if he will be denied boarding at the gate (then will have to arrange flights either skipping Egypt to next destination or home) or if he will get to Egypt and be turned around there.

Arranged travel insurance but I certain it won't cover stupidly not checking entry requirements before travelling. Looks like it's going to be an expensive mistake

Sorry, you are not telling him and willing to let him travel and be denied entry to Egypt?

BinBagDress · 13/08/2026 19:25

Where’s he going in Egypt? Not all places need an extra visa only the form you fill out on the plane. Honestly speaking Egypt was the easiest country to get into, I was actually shocked by how lax they are. I’ve been there three times and they barely look at the passport and certainly didn’t scan it on any occasion. Leaving was another story the security, exit visa checks, drug swabs, body searches etc where very unexpected the first time due to how lax they were on entry.

Yes, I'm not telling him as he is already abroad in another country not in the UK like I said in my OP. If he was at an airport here I'd tell him and go get him sort passport and rearrange trip.

I had this with son’s passport to Turkey. They rinsed me on arrival for £150 for a “visa” and apart from the stress and worry, it was fine.

stressedoutmumtoday · 13/08/2026 19:30

he is literally sitting at gate, his flight is actually delayed and he should have boarded already and I've just realised this.... might be wrong info from Google I've read but he isn't going to one of the resorts that you don't need visa for so I think I've got it correct now

don't think it would help to tell him at this point even if I am right

Yes I was hoping it was something that could be fixed by paying extra for visa on arrival but I don't know Egypt or systems there

Oh How stressful for you, I understand that must feel horrible. Which part of Egypt is he going to?

Surely it’s his decision whether or not to take that chance or make alternative arrangements? Presumably he is an adult?

Doggymummar · 13/08/2026 20:41

Last time I went to Egypt I paid £20 on arrival for a visa, same in Turkey I'm sure he'll be fine

He’s already checked in to his flight, through security and sitting by his gate waiting to board. There’s not actually much he can do at this point anyway except try and get on the plane!

Did you have the required amount of validity on your passport though?

Peonies12 · 13/08/2026 21:04

Hes an adult and he can take responsibility for himself.

Egypt visa is around £10 so if they ask for ££ tell him to refuse and ask to speak to someone official

stressedoutmumtoday · 13/08/2026 21:23

He is in the air, so it's just a case of waiting

I didn't say because at point I realised it seemed too late and I am slightly doubting myself as so many people have checked his passport details and it hasn't been flagged. I thought it would be an unnecessary stress and worry for him whilst flying and would look worse if it was picked up and he had to say "yes I realised earlier but risked it" than "oh my goodness I didn't realise, I'm a fool"

Maybe the wrong call on my part but I didn't have much time to decide and that's what I did.... obviously desperate to tell somebody hence the thread on here

He landed in Cairo and got jn with no comment so maybe info online was wrong. I'll be sure to renew passports earlier in future though as the stress has been awful. Hopefully he will have a great time now.

I’d probably tell him, just in case, but hopefully it’ll be fine. I’ve heard they’re not always that strict about the 6-month rule anyway.
