Why do female athletes wear what they do?

There aren't any rules (as there have been in some sports) so the women are competing in next to nothing through choice.

Is it comfortable? They all have a amazing bodies, but do they all like being on TV dressed this way? Is it performance? If so, why don't the men also do it?

Is there pressure from sponsors either directly or because the most 'saleable'get more sponsorship or advertising contracts?

I'm genuinely curious as to why they make these choices. I run and I wear less in competition than I do in training but wouldn't find high cut knickers comfortable to run in.

I'm not saying they can't. But if it really is so much better, why don't men wear shorts that are shorter than the long lycra ones they wear? Why are they mid thigh when they could be higher?

I would like to see some actual evidence of improved effect, such as has been done with the bobsleigh, skeleton and racing cycles to trim drag and improve speed incrementally.

The patriarchy likes seeing women in tiny clothing, maybe if we could see that it actually makes a difference we could agree that it's for athletic reasons rather than men liking watching women in skimpy clothing.

if it’s to do with the male gaze, why don’t female cyclists wear skimpier clothes than the men? Why do female swimmers wear kneesuits which are much more covering than the swimsuits worn by recreational swimmers?

Although yes I do agree it is routed in patriarchy I do wonder if you have ever seen a female athlete do a video showing a kit drop? Do you see which items they’re excited to wear?

You can’t change culture by taking away choice, but by ensuring that there is a full choice of what one can wear (like the unitards in gymnastics).

NerrSnerr · 13/08/2026 17:56

I do think that kits are more skimpy than they have been. The GB speedsuit covers quite a lot and the Netherlands kit Femke is wearing isn’t too skimpy either. I think Femke has always chosen to wear slightly longer shorts and it hasn’t stopped her from being the GOAT for many years

The clothing is not chosen for them they get options of what to wear. Including shorts and long tops, even full length leggings. They chose what they want from that list.
There’s a good YouTube video about it from a U.K. marathon runner called Philly Bowden on one of her q&as explaining why she, and so many others chose it from the options given to them

I tried to find this video, and couldn't (in fact, by googling it, I just found your comment on Mumsnet😂) Do you remember anything else that might help find it?

Oh yes the males have amazing physiques but the women with their arses out somehow detracts from all the hard work they must do to reach that level.

Maybe it's just me.

Google again.

"Female divers often wear high-cut or minimal-coverage swimsuit bottoms because tight, form-fitting suits reduce water drag, prevent the fabric from ballooning or trapping water upon high-speed impact with the pool, and stay securely in place during acrobatic twists and entry. "

They wear the clothes that they have chosen themselves from a range offered and the range gives them a good choice. They can wear pants/shorts/short or long leggings-crop tops/vests/t shirts or bodysuits like swim costumes or longer legging and joined vest or t shirts.
Just trust that they have personal choice and have every right to wear what they themselves feel comfortable in.

We should campaign for male athletes to be able to wear tiny little high-cut knickers (anatomically suitable ones of course). If the fabric in the leg crease is a disadvantage, why should men be disadvantaged?

And perhaps for them to wear fitted crop-tops like the women, or perhaps even no tops at all. After all, bare chests are not intrinsically offensive (are they?), especially for vigorous exercise, and anatomically suitable nether garments are still available.

Bloody hell 🙄
Male divers are a work of art but a bit of a woman's arse is distracting.
I mean wtf?!
Have a listen to yourselves.

Yes I remember a colleague complaining about the objectification of women. Pinned to her desk divider behind her were two pictures of the Diet Coke man

I've also seen threads where people were commenting on the attractiveness of footballers during the World Cup

Hush your mouth! It's a complete myth that women ogle attractive men. 🤣

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2026 20:04

Yes they do get a choice of kit from the sponsor.

You can also get kit from other places with the support of Team GB for various reasons.

Kit is also adapted to the athlete where necessary.

Swimmers get the trunks and swimsuits divers compete in for training.

For racing men and woman have a choice of velour or intent suits. Woman can wear open or closed back and men can wear high or normal waisted.

But when it comes to kit although athletes have a style they prefer to compete in they are a LOT less invested in the style than the general public!

FKAT · 13/08/2026 22:08

A lot of threads today het up about women exposing too much flesh in public. 🤔

So why don't the men do the same?

Because they have different body types and find different things comfortable. Female athletes don't need to worry about a bollock popping out of their running knickers

DeftGoldHedgehog · 14/08/2026 07:03

Just watched a bit of althetics this morning. All the 200 and 800 metre runners look appropriately attired and comfortable to me, running like the fucking wind.

Thats a thread for a different forum.

bitontheobtuse · 14/08/2026 09:48

As far as I'm concerned, athletes can wear whatever they damn well please.

If people get a bee in their bonnet about it, then it's their attitude that needs to change, not the clothes.
