Men with no underarm hair. Is this now normal?

I am currently watching some of the athletics. As the athletes are introduced they raise their arm to acknowledge the crowd’s cheers.

To my surprise I haven’t seen a single man with underarm hair. None of them look like they have arm or leg hair either.

Is this about streamlining their bodies so that they can run faster or is it now usual for young men more generally?

Hair wicks moisture away from the skin, leaving the skin less of a moist environment for smell-producing microbes. It's not true that shaved armpits are less smelly, it's pretty much the opposite.

I shave mine when I can be bothered (if wearing a dress to an event etc, not often), and I definitely get smellier when they're clean shaven. Using the same deodorant.

(Obviously the athletes will care more about aerodynamics than smell)

My Ds aged 15 and all his friends shave their arm pits. He says that deodorant works much better without the hair being there.

I'm old fashioned but I find this whole trend of man-scaping absolutely repellent.

There is nothing attractive to me about a man with a shaved or waxed body.

That’s fine. It’s the same as some men who find body hair on women repellant. That always goes down well on here…

I don’t shave my arm pits and I don’t smell. I don’t understand the obsession with removing body hair. Each to their own of course, but I can’t be bothered. I might occasionally shave my legs only if wearing a dress.

I shave kind of sporadically in summer, and I find I'm a bit smellier when I do - the underarm hair seems to have a wicking action that keeps my pits fresher.

So glad Im not the only one. I cant stand underarm hair on men.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 13/08/2026 07:52

I’ll have all the hairy fellas then. I can’t abide shaved chests, pits, pubes etc on men. Love a hairy chest. But then I can’t be bothered with regular shaving etc myself. I do enough to keep my pubes neat and not poking out of my swimsuit a la Smack The Pony but the rest of it? Nah, life’s too short.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 13/08/2026 07:57

I know I’m living in hypocrisy central but I find shaved men really quite unpleasant, stomach turningly so. None of my business what other people do, hopefully no one cares what I think.

I also don’t want men to get caught up in the endless cycle of shaving, waxing, scraping, buying products no one needs for a task no one needs to do.

Yes, I am sitting here with a significant lack of body hair myself.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 13/08/2026 08:00

My (much older) ex wouldn't even consider a little manscaping. Too effeminate. 🙄

Bring on hairless men! Much less smelly and itchy.

NoraLuka · 13/08/2026 08:05

I wish it could be a genuinely socially acceptable choice where men remove hair if they want to and so do women, and keep it if they want to.

I haven’t noticed shaved armpits on men, if it’s a new trend DP might start doing it in 10-15 years or so 😁

Me too.
I want a man to wash regularly, wear clean clothes, clean his teeth and be hygienic but this trend for additional male grooming puts me right off.

I’d say it’s a false equivalence. One involves people being exactly as nature intended without having to do anything at all; the other involves people having to spend money and potentially enduring discomfort in order to be acceptable to society.

Men who want to shave are not going to feel pressured to remain hairy just because some women prefer hairy men. Whereas some women feel under pressure to remove hair (including me, as mentioned earlier in the thread) because we know society judges us if we don’t.

@Waitingfordoggo" ( like dolphins but their skin feels awful)."

I wouldn't know. I've never cuddled a dolphin. Confused

Never try to cuddle a dolphin. They're nasty bastards. Especially after a session on the pufferfish.

The “supposed to have” argument is a bit of a misnomer, there are lots of things we do with our bodies which do not fit the “supposed to” logic. Does this mean we shouldn’t go the hairdresser or even brush our hair? That is not supposed to be. Does this mean men shouldn’t shave their faces?

l don’t understand how deodorant on a hairy armpit doesn’t clog.

I think having some armpit hair allows a bit more air circulation so it's not just skin against skin and that make you less sticky/sweaty. This is certainly true with me.
I curate my armpit hair and just trim it 😁

As pps have said, pretty normal in sports. Society is very conditioned to women removing body hair and it's seen as "normal" and "preferable". On non sporty men, it makes me think of those hairless cats.

Intimate waxing too for athletes etc
