Marmalade named drivers

Hi - looking at this and I’m confused.

does this mean I have to take my dc’s phone with me when I drive somewhere?

  1. You will be required to download the Marmalade Insurance app onto your smartphone and enter the activation code you will receive to allow your smartphone to pair with the telematics tag. Your phone must be compatible with our app, please check this list of devices.
  2. The phone must be taken on every trip in the car, with Bluetooth and location services enabled, and remain charged to more than 10% throughout the trip to ensure accurate recording of every trip.

its a car insurance for someone on a parents car, for aged up to 27 and lets them be a named driver and build up no claims etc. but I don’t understand the black box bit.

Would it not just be when your dc is driving? I'm not sure tbh

TofuTuesday · 12/08/2026 21:32

Thanks I’m just confused because of 2. If it said every trip you make in the car I would be more convinced it was just dc.
plus there’s a review saying ‘my family really liked the telematics as it encouraged safe driving’

My son was a named driver with Marmalade for my car but I had my own insurance with another company for my car. He had a black box with the app downloaded on to his phone but it only registered his journeys? He was PAYG but they don’t do that anymore.

ThatWasGreek · 12/08/2026 21:36

Do you all need the app and then it knows the difference? My dd has a black box so I feel like I should know this but I don’t.

My insurance provider, Admiral, has an app that monitors your driving without a black box. It shows all,the times and locations of my journeys.

Im so confused. I’m insured and my insurance doesn’t let me add under 25s.
rather than change I thought this sounded good but I’m confused by the requirement for the phone in every car journey.

It means every journey with the named driver, surely?

You would think but it says ‘the phone must be taken on every trip in the car’ rather than ‘every trip you make in the car’.

My niece had her black box insurance cancelled because her dad’s car was off the road for a couple of weeks and so he used her car and he used it more than she did so the insurance company cancelled the policy. It’s like the opposite of fronting!

Exactly. Otherwise every time you pop to tge shop on your own you have to take your son’s phone with you?? Makes no sense. I think it’s just poorly written. The only person Marmalades are bothered about is the person they insure surely?? As I said previously only my son, insured by Marmalade, had the app connected to the box on his phone not me.

That’s awful, did she get a chance to explain? Dc is at uni so I don’t want it cancelled for lack of use during term time.

maybe it’s poorly worded and it’s just the child’s phone, I did wonder if maybe I had to download it.

Both my kids started out with marmalade.
All drivers must download the app, it logs you as individuals.
So if I was driving the car, my child had to turn the Bluetooth off so my app was connected as I was driving.
When the child was driving, I turned my bluetooth off so they were connected.
Assuming you'll be in the car together.

But basically, whoever is driving needs their own app, on their own phone to know who the driver was.

Ah thank you. Do you think it would work for uni students where there would be several weeks of no driving?

Are you going to be driving the car when she is away?
As if the the car is driven without the driver using the app, the insurance will be cancelled, after a warning or 2.
So if you plan on driving the car while she is away you will definitely need the app on your own phone.

If the car isn't going to be used at all, it's not a problem.

TofuTuesday · 13/08/2026 09:03

Yes it’s my car, I use it maybe 4 days a week, and dc would be maybe 1 x week in holidays?

I’m not sure how it works with Marmalade but when I had a black box with Hastings you couldn’t just let the car sit for weeks or it would take your score to zero and you’d have your policy cancelled - even if a named driver was using it.

Ie. The policy holder had to be the main driver and had to use the car regularly.

No, she just got a letter saying it was cancelled. Which she didn’t read because she wasn’t there! It’s not great as now she has to disclose that she has had an insurance policy cancelled.

TofuTuesday · 13/08/2026 13:24

@ThatWasGreekthat is awful, it’s so much more expensive poor kid.

I don’t think this is going to work then, if it needs to be driven all the time by them. It’s more when dc is back from uni tbh
