When do you put you bins out? I.e. what time of day?

Ours goes out in bags so if you do it too early, the foxes get into them.

I've missed the collection this morning because on the first cool night in weeks, and being in the holidays, I slept until 7:35 and was woken by the sound of the bin lorry.

The council website says they must be at the edge of our property by 7:30am, but no earlier.

Are other people setting their alarms to get the rubbish out at exactly 7:30am?

I am lucky enough to have bins. I put them out the night before, because I go to work before my neighbours are up, and I wouldn't like to disturb them! Also, I can wheel the bins around the potholes when it is light (no streetlights here).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2026 11:22

Always the night before. We have 2 big bins (fortnightly) - landfill and paper/card, and a green box for plastics, glass, tins, etc. Alternate weeks for those.
Plus a weekly food waste collection.

DramaAlpaca · 12/08/2026 11:25

We have wheelie bins, three of them, and they go out the evening before. I get a text the day before collection telling me which bin to put out, which is helpful otherwise I'd never keep track as the collections are alternate weeks.

Bin bags only sounds like a complete pain, plus having to get up early to put them out.

Seeline · 12/08/2026 11:27

The night before - usually about 9ish, but we have bins.
They are not supposed to be o nthe pavement, but have nowhere else to put them.
They are supposed to be out by 7am, but ours are often collected at about 6.20am, so they have to go out the night before.

FrozenCharlottes · 12/08/2026 11:31

We’ve got wheelie bins, so no issues putting them out the night before.

If it was just in bags like you describe then I guess I’d have to be setting an alarm for first thing in the morning.

I think our council website just says to put the bins on the kerbside by x time (can’t remember the precise time), but I don’t think there’s any demand to not have them out early.

BrickBiscuit · 12/08/2026 11:33

We have wheelie bins that go out the night before, and pavements wide enough for a pushchair or wheelchair too. Collections vary between 7.30am and 3.00pm but they're not in the way. Pretty much the ideal scenario. I sometimes have biscuits, drinks or chocolates to give them which brightens everyone's day a little.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2026 11:35

Our are wheelbins and are normally put out at around 6pm the day before. They are on the end of our driveway with handles facing out. It is a private service though so if you miss collection you can ring them and if they are in the area they will come back.

LittleGreenDuck · 12/08/2026 11:37

We have so many different bins, boxes and bags for different waste, all collected in different weeks. It’s quite a minefield. Our council sends a notification on the app at 4pm on the day before collection to remind which waste is being collected this week, so I usually put it all
out then. The neighbours do
likewise, it’s a 4pm ritual!

Seeline · 12/08/2026 11:58

I'm impressed with all these Council's sending out weekly reminders!
Ours you have to print your own calendar of the website which never comes out in time for the Christmas chaos.
And even then they often don't come on the right day, or just take a random selection of bins from along the road.

orangehandles · 12/08/2026 12:05

Bin day today for us. We put stuff out last night and no issue with foxes etc, as they can't get in the wheelie bins anyway, and the food waste caddy has a handle that locks the lid when you push it down.

They are doing their rounds much earlier at the moment, like around 6am. I guess it is so they can finish by about 2 before it gets really hot.

Likeiloveyou · 12/08/2026 12:09

Out the night before. No stupid rules banning this.

LeahLine · 12/08/2026 12:13

Around 5pm the night before.

Our local foxes have worked out how to open the food waste bins, so they go out first thing in the morning on collection day.

We recently got new food waste bins which need to have the button pressed, so far fox proof.

I’m surprised that all councils don’t have wheelie bins yet. We put ours out the night before. Just binbags would be disastrous given how many foxes we have. I’m moving shortly and will be up a track and have to put the bins at the end of the track by the main road, gonna be fun.

chattyness · 12/08/2026 13:40

We have wheels bins, ours goes out night before unless it's really windy as even if bin is full it will still blow over here

afaloren · 12/08/2026 13:43

Wheely bins here. If I remember before about nine at night I’ll put them out then. Any later I set an alarm. Don’t want to wake our neighbours late at night. The bin men don’t come until about ten in the morning tho. And yes I always wait for the binfluencer!

Our food waste bins are like these - the foxes have learnt to flip the handle back over to unlock the lid and upend them.

Ours were the same, now the new ones have a button to unlock. We still have the old one but no longer use it.

muddyford · 12/08/2026 14:01

About 5.30 the evening before. Wheely bins here.

Variationofnormal · 12/08/2026 14:02

The afternoon before, we have wheelie bins. I hate that job, it takes ages as we are a family of 7 with a very long (shared) drive.

Haha thankfully the foxes here are not that bright and have not worked that out yet.

They’re little sods - there’s foxy footprints over everyone’s cars too, and we’ve had to chase them out of the house a couple of times.

Wheelie bins here so they go out the evening before. It must be annoying for you that your council only supplies bags.

pastadish · 12/08/2026 14:10

We have a wheelie bin, it’s goes out the afternoon before or early evening.

HarrietofFire · 12/08/2026 14:20

We have big communal bins in the back lanes between terraces so no one puts bins out anymore. It was awful at first with bins overflowing and people using the wrong bins all the time but seems to have settled down in our street now and is working better. It’s been a disaster in other areas of the city though with big problems with fly tipping into the communal bins.

We don’t have food waste yet. I think that’s going to be a nightmare to implement here. We don’t have any system for collecting individual waste anymore.

Wherethedogsits · 12/08/2026 14:28

Can you order the gull sacks in your area? Might be worth asking?

DH does it the night before or I do it at 5am on my way out.
