Powered wheelchair advice SE England

I know this is a niche subject. I'm looking for companies in the SE that will give advice on which powered wheelchairs to try, bearing in mind my living conditions, seating needs and intended use etc. So far I've found Recare and Gerald Simonds, does anyone know of any other companies? Wheelchair services have said that they will fit my NHS provided seating to private wheelchairs.

I got mine from Recare. I’m very happy with the advice they gave me, the after sales support and the power chair they sold me. It’s been transformative for me!

Best place is Wheelfreedom in Chessington just outside London. They have a huge range of wheelchairs, active ones, powered ones, battery packs for active ones as well as mobility scooters. They do multiple brands too.

Thanks - I'd prefer to be able to test them in my house and outside.

I came to recommend them too.

I think Invacare will bring 2/3 models to potential clients’ homes.
if Kent/East Sussex are any good, then Cinque Ports Mobility based at Ashford are very good and have excellent aftercare.

My experience is that if you want to test them in your home you need to go direct to each manufacturer and their reps will come out to you. That’s fine if you know what type you want and it’s making the tweaks or if you are happy to have multiple appointments with each rep.

What kind of thing are you looking for and what budget do you have in mind? DD1 uses a Benoit Lightdrive on a manual chair with a track wheel for off road. It has been excellent and, IMO, more flexible than a power chair because it all breaks down.

GRX Life will do home visits. They're based in Alton.

Do you want one that can elevate you op? There are so many options available now you needs to say some of your needs. I notice your user name and presume you enjoy going to the theatre where seat access can be tricky? You realise you can now get one that can climb stairs? Will you want to go more then 15mph?

MusicalTheatreLover · 11/08/2026 15:20

Thanks all. I definitely want tilt in space as it helps with posture/comfort, possibly a riser too (or is that just something else to go wrong?). Speed wise I think class 2 or class 3? My seating is a Jay back and Jay cushion. I'm looking for something that will be ok on uneven pavements, as where I live there are lots. Another problem is my front door is 27", which apparently is 1" less than a normal door. I'm Oxfordshire based.
