Will I regret getting a built-in split air conditioning system?

I’m 55, menopausal, and LOATHE hot weather. I can’t think straight, my clothes feel awful, my joints ache and swell, it’s horrible. And word is from my loved ones that I am horrid too when over heating.

I need :
a new boiler
to replace my car fairly soon as it has intergalactic mileage and bits keep going wrong
A new window in the front room as the DG has blown
eldest wants invisible braces
really need a holiday.

We already have portable aircon with a pipe that goes out of the window. I suppose it sort of works but it’s so noisy and leaks water and smells musty.

Will I regret ordering a proper split system, built in?

I’ve just paid a deposit for a system, don’t expect to have it this side of this year but good prep for next summer, I cannot stand how hot our house gets, the heat just doesn’t dissipate. Pleased to see by all those who have it and say money well spent - can I ask if you have it in bedroom is it reasonably quiet?

Yes - mine is the same noise level as a fan when its on its highest 'fan' setting. But we typically have temp set low, and low/mid fan speed on the unit and its really very quiet. Outside fan system is also quiet, even when running all 3 internal AC units.

Best decision we ever made when we modernised our home five years ago - as other posters have said the heating function in winter is an added bonus.

Not a heat pump, just a common split system. One in the bedroom and one in the kitchen/diner.

The split systems are heat pumps, air to air. If they weren’t you’d need planning permission

I may have only half a tale here but the installer can get me two indoor units each with their own outdoor bit. One outdoor bit goes on the side elevation quite high up and one on the back. And he can supply and fit in 2 weeks. (I got the quotes months ago so I was already in the system as it were).

We just got aircon installed a few weeks ago. It's so good! We live in a new build which holds so much heat, I'm 25 weeks pregnant and was melting, have a young son who was having night terrors from being too hot in bed and husband works from home (office was over 30 degrees some days). We now can live and work and sleep so much more comfortably. No regrets, it solved so many problems in one go. It also uses a lot less power than the portable units so you will start saving once it's been paid for and installed.

Braces and holiday aren't essential. You couldn't pay me to holiday anywhere hot or without aircon right now 😅

Get the air pump ones that heat too. Amazing things

We had it installed a few weeks ago and it’s heaven! No regrets here

It's so easy to spend other people's money isn't it? I bet it's lovely, but it's also a nice to have.

I wouldn't jeopardise being able to replace the boiler or car for this - both essentials and things that work until the day they don't, & suddenly fail past economic repair. I also wouldn't give up the holiday for it. We got a heat pump when our boiler was on its last legs, and jumping before it actually failed probably saved us thousands.

Also I do wonder if the cost of AC fitting is peak right now, and it'll be significantly cheaper in Jan.

We've booked our electrician to fit two here but he won't have stock of them until around November. They heat as well as cool, so it's a no brainer for us. I can't bear trying to sleep in this weather, and we had to have the windows shut last night as the wildfire smoke from wales was drifting over (Gloucestershire) and it absolutely stank. The bedroom was 28c at 1am...

@ADogRocketShip that is great to know and really helpful, thank you! Sounds a million times quieter than the portable one we have pumping out the window at the mo!

Yes get it.nits what they use in Australia.

Notbuiltforheat · 15/08/2026 18:17

Welllllll they’re coming to fit it on Tuesday! I can’t wait! 8000 BTU for the bedroom and 12000 for the kitchen diner.

(this purchase will obviously guarantee shitty weather until next summer so that’s a double win.)
