Rhino’s hitting cars in West midlands safari park today

So this isn’t anywhere I can read.
Today we were caught up in Rhinos fighting at WMSP- West Midlands safari park.

Rhinos were fighting then cars were in the way of their fight so they started trying to move the cars out their way. It looked more like head flicks and shunts rather than trying to do serious damage, but 3 cars were hit repeatedly.

But the issue is is that this lasted a long time, around 5mins. During this time the park did not stop cars coming in. As they had not seen what was going on people were still trying to pass to get into the fighting arena with their kids hanging out the windows.

There was no influx of keepers to help the one getting hit and they still kept sending the cars through. These things happen but there seemed to be no alert go out to stop the cars. Or even a halt for 5mins to assess the situation if the fighting rhinos needed to be removed and the park was safe, just keep the money flowing in.

I have tried to contact the park but just got a well read your email in 7 days and no other way to contact.

Oh 100% I’m sure when you buy a ticket it says so in the T&Cs, accept that. It was just their response to the situation and handling of it. Longleat has more signs about entering at your own risk etc

When I went to Longleat they also had someone in a tractor keeping the rhino a flare distance from any cars.

What would you like mumsnet to do about it?

Tell the rhinos they are being unreasonable.

Yeh I think with all the new accommodation they move the animals for the people staying to see them.

This is really helpful thank you. The rhinos we saw fighting had fresh wounds on their faces afterwards.

They really didn’t seem to know what they were doing in the jeeps.

Yeah this is exactly what happened. The jeep was moving the rhinos to be in front of the lodges, but the park was still full with a queue of cars. One rhino walked in front of our car into a fence and then did the damage to the car in front of us while it was trying to back out. I can't believe they were moving them into a queue of cars without any organisation.

Tell the rhinos they are being unreasonable.

Or ban them for 24 hours, whilst reminding them that charging into cars is against Mumsnet talk guidelines.

There are signs saying sound horn for help. But that wouldn’t have helped as the keepers could already see what was happening and couldn’t contain the situation and the park kept flooding the cars in.

Op there must be some sort of zoo regulation body you can report this too.

Did you get any photos

Tell the rhinos they are being unreasonable.

😂 The rhinos were being reasonable and doing rhino things and if they are used to being shunted by the jeeps they probably see cars as fair game to shunt them back.

The park was being unreasonable

No had dropped phone trying to move little people from the doors. Said it would have been amazing footage! No dashcam and I wonder if the parks have cameras covering all the enclosure, couldn’t see any. Car next to us was a Tesla so they film constantly?

I agree about having a no more cars let in process

With a “no isa complete sentence” if they try to argue back 😂

Sorry about that, ongoing beef.

Ask on Facebook. Local groups will have someone who has footage. The Shuttle might pick it up as breaking news...it'd be a big story for them 😉

@Maninasuitcase youve written in perfectly thank you. We put our hazards on to try and get people to stop passing us but then turned them off to not want to piss off the rhino once they had calmed down.
We just kept saying why are they not stopping people or coming to help?

I live near and know where you can see the rhino enclosure from outside, its common to see cars broken down and rangers in attendance to get them moving,

We saw something similar to this at another safari park - the car in front of us in the monkey enclosure was swarmed and both wipers and other parts were ripped off. They did have signs warning this could happen but it was extensive!

Oh OnceUponaTime it was awful, my hands went to jelly and I just couldn't start it and the children were shouting and I had a horrible feeling they were going to get in through the engine department. Yes monkeys are small but they are incredibly strong

Rhi-no is a complete sentence surely?! 😅

Hoppinggreen · 10/08/2026 13:35

A camel sat on the bonnet of my car at Woburn safari park once and dented it
Also the Monkeys at Knowsley safar park are Savage, they rip off all sorts from cars

PineappleCoconut · 10/08/2026 13:55

We made the mistake of driving through Longleat monkey enclosure once, it was a hot day and the monkeys knew how to pull out the windscreen washer pipe to get water.

Ours didn’t have as much windscreen washer fluid as others clearly did so our car came off less badly damaged than some in front and behind us Grin. They would spit some of the water out and attack others’ windscreen wipers and washer bits if the mix was too strong Confused

But I wouldn’t drive through again.

HumberSquid · 10/08/2026 14:05

I used to work as a keeper in a safari park and we used to have a keeper plus gun and land rover in every drive through enclosure. They kept an eye on things and would radio to the gate keepers to stop the flow of traffic when a problem occurred.

So keepers cant stop rhinos fighting and are unlikely to even try but YANBU to think there should have been a better response.

Our park moved from having individual cars drive through to putting visitors on a land train with self locking doors and windows that dont open in the end, bit that was to protect the animals from the visitors more than the other way around.

RunningRhino · 11/08/2026 12:02

@DY10DY11 that’s a pretty good description! The one that went through the wheel arch if it had been a different car would have killed the passenger or ruptured the petrol tank.

And exactly what we said about them not stopping people at all and shit response from the park.

@RhinoatWestMidlandsSafariPark not at all, you were just rhinos being rhinos and the cars got in your way. It was the rubbish keepers fault for feeding more cars into your battle arena.

We very much appreciated the speed of your initial battle run and felt privileged at that point!

RunningRhino · 11/08/2026 12:05

The car that got the horn in the side was luckily a pick up truck so it went in and under the wheels arch

RunningRhino · 11/08/2026 12:05

The car pictured in the newspaper article wasn’t the worst car hit either

OP posts:
RunningRhino · 11/08/2026 12:14

Still no response yet from the park
