It's not cold unless you buy something from a chiller cabinet.
Warm, fragrant, plump seasoned sweet and slightly sour rice, savoury, rich and delicate salmon, sweet and tender prawns, the bite of wasabi and umami of tamari, fresh, crisp cucumber, fresh and crisp, moist and delicate daikon grated or finely sliced, sharp and sweet gari, sesame, nori, little sweet and savoury, glistening ikura that pop on your tongue, all in small, attractive little shapes.
Add in warming miso with tofu, spring onions, tomato, seaweed and a little togarashi or steaming hot and crispy tempura, soft, slightly sweet and slightly savoury mochi with a fresh strawberry hidden under the bean paste and it's a comforting pleasure for people who enjoy it.
For the vegans amongst us, they are more than welcome to enjoy fresh and light cucumber maki, sweet, savoury and soft inari, vegetable tempura (I can heartily recommend potato, asparagus, sweet potato and mushroom versions) and suchlike.
It's absolutely nothing like the cheap, flavourless, almost devoid of nutrition shite I was dragged up on. Which is why it's so good.
