DN is starting a year abroad at the University of Bologna in September and is a bit apprehensive. Has anyone had experience of studying at an Italian University or Bologna specifically? Any advice or info about how to prepare, what to know before she goes? Her DPs have rarely been abroad, so won't have any experience to share. Thank you!

Bologna is beautiful and a foodie paradise. Lucky niece. I don’t know it well I’m afraid, but suspect she’ll have the time of her life.

One of my children has friends studying at other Italian universities. It’s quite demanding - no soft pedalling on the academics.

DS had friends doing his same course at Bologna and he was impressed with how organized the course and exam schedules were. It’s a historically left-wing city so I would expect good student welfare and professor-student relations.
Is DN going for an Erasmus year? In that case I’d expect her to stay with her international cohort without much interaction with students that are there for the long haul. But she should at least learn conversational Italian to get by.
If she’s going for a postgraduate experience she should translate her thesis (AI is fine) and be prepared to interact with professors in English AND Italian.
Many courses don’t start until late October because of exam re-sits in September. Attendance is expected at morning and afternoon tutorials and register is taken. Exams are graded out of 30 (and “lode” if you do exceptionally well) and anything less than 24 usually gets refused by the student. You can sit them as many times as you like but only accept once. They are Oral and written with different weights (eg an exam is worth 12 points towards your degree and another is worth 6).
Your student ID, results and fee payments etc are online.
Bologna is a great city but student accommodation is hard to find anywhere. I expect Erasmus will have their own accommodation. Otherwise many students take on a lease in July so they are sure of a place to stay in October. Facebook groups for “appartamento in condivisione” are the best way to find flatmates.
Hope she has a great time!

Bologna is absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the student quarter once and was there for graduation weekend. It was brilliant. It felt much like a UK university city.
