On Saturday, I want to go from York to see hardraw force, and ideally I don’t want to drive on narrow roads ? Willing to go on bus

happy to go partly on the bus

just I don’t really like driving on narrow country roads where you have to stop when other larger cars come in the opposite direction

is that what it like driving round there ?

I did google
and one option suggested seemed to be drive to ribblehead
then bus to hawes

so wondered if any locals or people that have been there know about This

I don’t think the roads round there are like that. Some will be windy etc but not narrow in the way you describe

NewLeafNewStart · 06/08/2026 23:17

Ok thanks
maybe I should just drive then

just when I go to dovedale in Derbyshire
I hate driving down there

I’d go York- Leyburn - Hawes- Hardraw.
Hawes to Hardraw is the narrowest bit and it’s less than 2 miles, but not super narrow. I’m sure cars can pass without issue 95% of that road too. The rest is somewhat winding roads once you’re off the A1, but wide, tractors etc on one side will pass cars on the other without difficulty.

It is driving yes.
I’d go the A59 out of York but it depends on where you’re based - though the ring road is easy enough.

Spareincoming · 07/08/2026 00:20

I think there’s buses from Catterick Garrison Tescos to Hawes and Leyburn, there’s buses from Leyburn to Hawes and then it’s a 30 ish minute walk.

Starting at hull road

Bus? Don’t even think about it - it’s not worth it and the waterfall is not that amazing to warrant such a hassle of a journey. Prefer aysgarth if you are to see anything. Driving is very doable but quite a long journey. What about something closer to York for your trip? Castle Howard is a fave of mine (I know it’s not a waterfall!)

Spareincoming · 07/08/2026 01:20

There used to be a good Chinese on Hull road. But I’d still take the A59 out of York.

I’m not overly enthusiastic about Hardraw force but I know some folks who love the place. I like Harmby Falls near Leyburn.

Well according to ai it’s not that hard to drive to, an hour and half and it’s on normal two way roads
so think I might drive
just not a fan of them country roads where you have to reserve or get stuck or pull over etc

@NewLeafNewStart My sibling is a town driver through and through and they dislike the narrow roads but don’t bat an eyelid about going up to Hawes from Portsmouth.
If they had to go over the Buttertubs pass and into Swaledale they’d refuse as some of those roads are narrow!

Google maps says it's closer to 2 hours, and you can look on Google street view to see what the roads are actually like, it looks like it's not too narrow and twisty.

Is Hardraw force the one where you park at the pub and pay a fee to go out the back to see the waterfall?

Public transport would take an age, I'd not do that.

Bjorkdidit · 07/08/2026 11:19

But I'd wonder what the waterfall looks like in such dry weather? It might be a bit underwhelming.

Yes it is, and mainly normal to Hardraw.
I spent an awful lot of time with family up there in my teens and 20s so know the area well.

I took was thinking that there won't be a lot of water to see. You really need to go in early spring spring if it's been a snowy wet winter or after a load of wet weather. Been a couple of times and there was no water to speak of. My friend went and it was like a tsunami crashing over the rocks.

Is there a Facebook page for it? Maybe ask there about the water situation . But agree with others roads are 'normal'
