Can't afford a loft room ; has anyone just had it boarded so better use of the space and a window put in ? If so was it a big job /££ and will it help if we can ever afford to go the whole way ?

Sorry long question there I'm wondering if it's somerhing we should do ?
Will it help if we do want to do the whole thing ? I'm also thinking maybe it's the only room we could install air con in which may help the whole house keep cool /install a window also ?
Of course it will be better for us in terms of access and storage .any thoughts or costs /up hewval

@Ted27 thanks
That's a good idea re local builder.

We are also without any external storage.

Do you have trussed rafters or older style rafters and purlins? What is the spacing between them?Velux do a rooflight that fits between rafters if they are spaced at 600 mm which will be cheaper than needing to cut and trim rafters.

Ceiling joists are not usually strong enough to support a domestic floor so usually need upgrading for a proper conversion. Also think about where your insulation is and whether it needs improving.

How deep is your insulation? If it's just one layer it's simple to put a few boards down yourself with a drill and a screwdriver. B&Q do a pack of 12 OSB 3 Loft Panel Boards Tongue and Groove and that covers 4.39m2 so you probably want more than one pack. If you have a lot of insulation you'd need loft stilts and I dont suggest you try that if inexperienced with diy.

You dont generally need planning permission for a loft window, a builder should be able to ensure you comply with building regulations.

No it wont help if you ever want to make it into living space but extra storage is always good and a window left open in the loft will let some hot air out.

If you dont have a light in the loft space get a work light.

@KentnotClarke I don't actually know the total cost. The boarding was just over 1k, and they had built a proper wooden frame above the old joists. I'd say overall definitely less than 5k.
