I have a 16 year-old DS who will be starting college next month. He is neuro diverse and, as a result, did not attend mainstream secondary school so doesn’t have any friends IRL at the moment. He is a keen gamer and is going to be studying game design but because of his lack of interaction with other teens we are out of touch with what his peer group will be wearing. He takes very little interest in how he looks, but because of the issues he has, I want to help him to fit in as much as possible to make social interaction easier for him. He’s tall and prefers soft fabrics like tracksuit bottoms because he struggles with the sensation of tight clothes against his skin. Any pointers on what your boys are wearing would be really useful, thank you.

Hollister is another option.

Half the studnets on the course will probably be ND. Dark tracksuit bottoms with dark T shirt and hoodie (don't worry about brands) will be fine.

2 of my DCs studied games design. Clothes were never an issue, no one really cares, even now they are working. Most of their peers wear joggers or shorts and t shirts, sometimes with a hoody or a shirt. They are the scruffiest bunch imaginable! The smarter ones wear cargo pants or jeans, I’ve never seen any of them wearing actual trousers or formal shirts, or even a plain jumper. Your DS will be fine wearing whatever he is comfortable in.
H&M were great for my youngest at 6’1.

Idk if this will put you at ease a bit but my nephew is autistic and has just started game design at college. A lot of the kids on his course are also autistic, and he’s made lots of friends for the first time in his life! At his. College they’re very much open and it’s more acceptable to wear what you want, there’s loads of goths about and stuff.

I have a 16 year old, also going to college in September and doing games design among other things. He wears joggers or chino type trousers, T shirts and hoodies. He wouldn’t be seen dead in anything with a label (no north face, Nike, adidas etc.) He buys his own clothes, I think him and his friends like pull and bear and primark. He likes a bargain so lots of supermarket clothes. It all seems to matter less though that it did when I was that age. They really don’t seem to care what anyone else is wearing so don’t overthink it.

Mum of ND dd13 and DS11, but I now work in a college, (with adults but see teens in the corridors each day) boys are generally comfy clothes and non description colours, lots of joggers and hoodies, branded and non branded also , lots of combat trousers. I don’t think there is the same issue of needing to fit in clothes wise in college. The boys look like they grabbed something each morning- the girls huge variety of styles and look intentional. I hope he has a great time and finds his people.

Mine likes plain black joggers - the 100% cotton ones from M&S. Carhartt or North Face hoodies, Nike or Converse trainers, and he has about twelve million vintage NASCAR t-shirts but that's probably just him! I hope your son meets his tribe in college.

Ds is 14 but quite into clothes and likes baggy jeans or joggers with open hems
like this And loose long shorts like this. He likes hollister, cernucci (expensive!) and route one. T shirts he likes plain white relaxed fit ones from next boys, they’re only £6.50 I think and go up to age 17. He also has a hollister polo shirt. But I think k basically if he goes for baggy open hem joggers or shorts and plain t shirts and hoodies he will fit right in!

TwoTallTerrors · 06/08/2026 20:20

Another vote for hollister tall joggers. DS says he loves how soft they are.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 06/08/2026 20:26

In my experience of dropping DS (also ASD) to college pretty much anything goes in terms of style. My DS has very specific style tastes and loves to experiment and he’s never had an issue with people judging what he wears. Wide leg joggers or jeans seem pretty standard these days.

Bufftailed · 06/08/2026 20:28

Baggy I think. Baggy jeans, plain jumpers. H snd M is good. New Balance trainers

edmundelephant · 06/08/2026 22:38

My very tall 15 year old DS likes the wide leg joggers from Uniqlo. They do them in longer length but I have only ever seen them online rather than in store. He also likes plain t-shirts from H&M, baggy jeans, vans trainers and DM’s. I hope that your DS enjoys his course and has a good experience of college.

LadybirdZombieApocalypse · 07/08/2026 07:47

@Razzlefrazzlehe’s 5’ 8” maybe 5’ 9” and they’re a decent length. Can’t recall if they come in different leg lengths but check out their website 😊

My 16 year old DS wears baggy joggers, jeans and t shirts. He has a part time job so buys a lot of his own clothes and has a mix of labels and non label bits. He also loves a charity shop retro t shirt! Among his friends they all seem to wear similar, greys, black and white.
