Ds has an interview as a hotel receptionist. His first interview, not sure what ti wear. Is a shirt and navy chinos ok or should he wear tie, blazer? Would all black clean trainers be ok?

A hotel receptionist is a very smart appearance as they are the first representative of the hotel brand. They are usually in a suit and tie so he should match that. At least the blazer if not actual suit jacket. Better to be too smart than not.

And I would say shoes not trainers.

My son went for an office job interview a couple of weeks ago and he wore smart suit trousers, crisp white shirt, tie and smart shoes. He didn’t wear a jacket because it was about 30c here!
Good luck to your son! 🤞🏻

I would judge someone seeking this job if they were NOT wearing jacket, shirt and tie, and proper shoes. It's really not difficult.

Definitely a suit, including a tie. And shoes not trainers.

Malasana · 06/08/2026 11:01

Either shirt and tie with a suit or trousers, shirt and tie with a suitable blazer.
Shoes - nice and clean - not trainers.

Shinckle · 06/08/2026 11:06

I'd pick suit trousers and polished shoes over the blazer if it's either/or. (eg because he has black suit trousers from school and a navy blazer).

Tie, yes probably, to be on the safe side, though I know my colleagues don't bother with them even for interviews these days. I think he can get away without a jacket in a heatwave.

MyDarlingRose · 06/08/2026 11:34

He needs shoes, shirt, trousers. Tie would be good. Blazer or jacket not needed in this heat.

I think it depends. Is it a 5 star hotel or a premier inn? Or something in between? I would however always dress smart for any interview. Trainers are a no.

Pinkpunk2 · 06/08/2026 15:50

He's got black trousers, white shirt, navy tie but no black shoes! Would brown look. Ok?

I don't think brown shoes would go well with black trousers, no. Brown shoes go with blue trousers. When is the interview? Is there time to get black shoes?

Iliketulips · 06/08/2026 15:59

As a start I'd say shirt, smart trousers and shoes. If he's got a smart blazer/jacket and suitable tie, then he could always wear those if current staff are currently in suits (some places are more relaxed aa long as your tidy and clean).

TokyoSushi · 06/08/2026 15:59

Hotel reception manager for many years here, what type of hotel is it? He should try to match the 'vibe' if he can, what do they wear on the reception desk? If it's a suit & tie, do the same, if it's trousers and a shirt, do the same.

How old is he? If he's young, 18/19/early twenties, then a full suit if that's not required for the job is a bit much...

GreenSedan · 06/08/2026 16:00

100% a suit.

Maybe try Vinted if there's time?

Balloonhearts · 06/08/2026 16:02

I don't think they'd go, he needs either black shoes or swap to navy trousers and jacket to match the tie. You need to get him an interview suit really, especially if he's applying for roles where the dress code is business smart. He needs to look put together and professional, not like a kid who's just cobbled together clothes from his dad's wardrobe.

MalteserGeezee · 06/08/2026 16:06

Always err on the side of smartness and formality for interviews. Get him set up with a suit ideally, but failing that, some smart black shoes, smart black trousers and selection of maybe three professional ties to use interchangeably, plus a couple of fresh, crisp.white shirts.

Shinckle · 06/08/2026 16:10

We've bought emergency suit trousers from Tesco for about £25, and my son liked them so much he now has 3 pairs. Those in navy plus navy tie and brown shoes is probably cheaper than buying him black shoes.

I can see why you'd be tempted to stick with chinos he already has though, especially if it's for a holiday job. I honestly don't know.
