How sad.

I would guess that he took 'everyone fluffs on their cv' far too literally

I hope that him being non verbal as a child, and overcoming that, was true.

I hope Cambridge still continue the investigation. Bet they don't though!

Kingdomofsleep · 05/08/2026 20:31

There's zero contrition there for bringing disrepute to Cambridge and to the academic area of Sociology (an area which a lot of people are cynical about already).

He's also gifted this huge amount of ammunition to racist people who think black people can't be academic, like that guy Nathan Cofnas who helped expose him.

Cambridge has questions to answer about it all. I hope that Arday resigning won't stop the investigation about how he was appointed

I wouldn't expect any contrition, completely agree about the use racists ill make of this, but feel overall that the major issue is how Cambridge ever allowed themselves to lionise such a man, and exactly what a supposedly intelligent group of people were prepared to do in pursuit of inclusivity

Trouble is the answers may well be uncomfortable, which is why I'll be amazed if the "investigation" comes to anything

Yes, they’ll say there was an investigation but it was all done behind closed doors and the outcome is classified blah blah blah

It’s sad that it seems this was exposed for racist reasons because it means black people have been held to higher standards than other ethnicities again, when academia is riven with champion bullshitters who are just generally a bit more subtle about it. I want to be like “Yeah great he’s out” but I can’t reconcile the fact that, as far as I can make out, this was the result of a campaign by a racist. I guess even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day. I just feel like this is only a massive win for the racists.

Darragon · 06/08/2026 14:42

I do think it’s bloody typical that GLP took it on though. Is anyone keeping track of their win/lose case stats (maybe there’s a proper name for them)? Because I don’t remember ever seeing them win anything. I wouldn’t trust them to win a free fries during McMonopoly.

I think you're right in this case about Nathan Cofnas being the person to shine a light on Arday but I do think any Oxbridge professor saying some of this stuff would have just as much public interest once it hit the papers.

It's like the vat on private schools thing, some people are just a bit resentful of Oxbridge in general and love to see someone pulled off a pedestal.

Nearly all of us have a slight chip on our shoulder that we didn't do quite as well as we could have done academically (or just me?). And we've all known a guy at a party brag that he's run so many marathons or raised so much for charity and rolled eyes about how implausible it is and wished someone would shut him up. So this story is just really relatable.

It may well be that the 'joker' was exposed in connection with his race. But there was a whole raft of people who knew him that were not racist and wanted him to succeed but they did not question his claims. Naïve or gullible or uncaring.
Whatever reason they failed Jason as well as their Universities. They also failed them selves I think.

TidyRose · 06/08/2026 15:21

There are two other cases reported in today's Times of massive false claims. One, Amran Hussein, a one time Labour Party candidate, committed fraud to do with employment in senior NHS positions. £168,000 it cast the NHS.
The other Katy Angliss a professor at Warwick University forged a signature to help get a senior position. Warwick sacked her and she tried to claim unfair dismissal. The Uni won that one.
Is no one honest except us here?
