European holidays, are you a one week or a two week fan?

Of course, any short haul holiday the answer is 10 days, but with this not really widely available in a package set up (aware you can do your own thing), which do you prefer? I love day six of a holiday and you're all relaxed ready to go home.

The idea of staying for two weeks strikes me is a little bit boring but I am very easily bored.
I think in my six week teacher holidays, I'd rather do two weeks of holiday/activities/trips rather than one solid two weeks stretch.

(I haven't got any kids at home anymore.)

2 weeks split over 2 places. We're thinking of a week walking in Austria followed by a week on Lake Constance next year.

If it's purely lazy, a week.

SwedishEdith · 05/08/2026 16:22

Two weeks is good if you move around - 3 days one place, a week somewhere else and 4 days somewhere else. Don't do pool or beach holidays so need to be a mix of interesting towns and cities. But have recently had a 4 night and a 5 night holiday and they felt like good breaks. Leaves more leave for another trip somewhere.

I never really want to come home but I do get really bored of eating out every evening. I don't do the cooking though so I'm not one of those "If I have to cook, it's not a holiday".

Depends on the holiday. 4 nights in Europe is perfect for me, as is 4 night’s skiing. We’re off to Rome (Gd help me in that heat) and then a 13 day cruise around the med.

We have a cat and we don’t go anywhere for more than 6 days. I couldn’t bear the stress.

I’m dreading leaving mine and we have a cat sitter moving in who they love. Still dreading it.

I like 10 days and you can do it by adding 3 days to a 7 day stay.

Other than that I would prefer 2 weeks... But I begrudge having to use that much annual leave at one time and like to have a bit of re-set time before going back to work.

zurigo · 05/08/2026 17:22

It depends on what you do with the two weeks. If it's a lie by the pool type holiday a week would be more than enough for me, because I'd be bored stiff doing that for two weeks. Once a year though I love to be away for at least two weeks, because I really relax in that second week and forget all about home and work. If I'm only away for a week I don't get to that zen state! But I'm an active holidayer - a two week trip will usually involve 2-4 different locations and lots of days out doing things.

Short holidays are good too - a week for skiing is plenty, a city break 3-4 days is often enough (although depends on the city and how far away it is).

Rainbows246 · 05/08/2026 17:28

We don’t do beach/pool but city/views type holidays so tend to do 3-5 nights depending on where we go and cost/things to do. That way you get a bit of home chill time too. (no kids!)

We do two weeks in our camper with one night travelling either way and usually about 8/9 nights in one place and then 3 in a second place. Our reasons for going for two weeks aren't relevant to you as a teacher, though - we do one two-week holiday because the planning to go away and the catching up on return are hard for both of us in our jobs, for us to go twice would be very stressful.

FloneTank · 05/08/2026 17:34

What to do you if one wants to explore city and other wants to see nature

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 05/08/2026 17:42

A week, for lots of reasons. Don't have to watch the budget when we're there, don't have take more luggage or dick about washing things in a sink. We've got outdoor cats, and one goes on extreme manoeuvres if we're away for too long even though they're well cared for while we're away, and at times we've had to go looking for her. I'd also rather take more frequent breaks from work. Always need to have some leave booked to look forward to. Plus I have older teens, and while they like going somewhere new they do miss their mates and reliable unlimited wifi, so wouldn't want two weeks.

That being said, the rare times I've been away for two weeks I've come back much more rested, so it's definitely a win either way.

Book a holiday to Cape Town.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/08/2026 17:44

11 nights for us.

A week isn’t enough but 2 weeks is too long. 11 nights is just right.

Good point. But I'm terrified about getting mugged or worse killed

gingercat02 · 05/08/2026 17:46

We usually do 10 days, 2 weeks is too long but 1 is too short. Also you get time to do the washing and chill at home for a couple of days before you have to go back to work. Skiing is the exception I'm knackered after a week.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/08/2026 17:46

I like a week in one place and it feels like enough. Even just four nights for a Canary Islands ‘fly and flop’ in the middle of winter.

We’ve done a few 3 week holidays in Europe with our caravan and you can cover a lot of ground in 3 weeks. So one time we stayed at campsites in France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany and then France again on the way back. That was brilliant- felt like a long break with lots of different food, architecture, culture etc but didn’t feel like a rush at all.

FloneTank · 05/08/2026 17:49

Do you not enjoy short weekend trips? Previous DS has done holidays where he's 2 days in one place. 2 days in another. So 4 days and then goes home.

BoarBrush · 05/08/2026 17:51

Always 2 weeks at least. By the end of week one you're just getting settled really. I never want to come home from abroad though.

H202too · 05/08/2026 18:05

2 weeks for me if it's long-haul or medium-haul.

Sometimes I'll consider 1 week for a short-haul destination but always seem to end up booking 2 weeks.

As I've got older, it's too much hassle to go abroad for short trips even though I have stayed places for 3-7 nights plenty of times years ago.

I've even been to the same hotel multiple times - something I said I'd never do 😁

I just know what I like!

LlynTegid · 05/08/2026 18:25

One week, so I don't have to wait as long for the next one.

330ml · 05/08/2026 18:27

Usually two weeks. Sometimes longer. We might do a just a week in addition to a two week European holiday.

FloneTank · 05/08/2026 18:27

We did 4 days in Paris once and found that enough
