I've been to dinner at BF's parents' several times...

Am I supposed to reciprocate?

He lives with them - long story centred on his father's care needs. They quite often ask me to join them for dinner, which is always lovely, both food and company.

I live with my adult DC and BF stays with me a few nights a week.

Would it be usual (or weird?) for us to invite them back? I don't think they expect it, but not sure if I should or not. His Dad's condition makes food tricky and I know he doesn't like eating out. Mum always does something light that he can have a tiny portion of, but I could also do that.

Fwiw I've said BF because we don't live together and likely never will but this is an established relationship where we consider each other in all aspects of plans etc.

I think it certainly could be nice if you offer

I bet his mum would appreciate it

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/08/2026 02:03

Could you take his mum out for lunch?

LivingTheDreamish · 05/08/2026 02:06

Surely your BF will know if they would like this? But it sounds like a nice thing to do.

Definitely offer, they will probably refuse but will know that they are welcome at your house.

If, by any remote chance, they accept, just ask what would be suitable for you to cook so that they don't stress about any possible digestive repercussions.

I think it's a lovely thing to do.

You don't have to justify your relationship either, of course you consider each other in plans! Makes no difference that you don't live together at all.

EmpressStorm · 05/08/2026 17:32

I think offer and you need to offer to both, don’t just take his mum out for lunch and ignore the dad, as your first in. Thays horrible.

CrypticClueless · 05/08/2026 17:35

See what your Bf thinks.

AutumnLover1990 · 05/08/2026 17:37

Definitely offer. If they are limited to home, offer to cook or treat them to a takeaway 😀

humptydumptyfelloff · 05/08/2026 19:37

What a lovely gesture op

maybe you could take his mum for lunch somewhere once in a while if his dad doesn’t eat out

Redkatagain · 05/08/2026 21:45

Why not offer and f they are limited to home, take a shepherds pie or a casserole with you and pop in their oven
