I don't. We got on perfectly well, I'm very happy that he's happy, but if I need to speak to "them" I call him.

My MIL never calls me. DH talks to her every week and if I’m in the room, I’ll chat to her briefly.

We spend a weekend at hers every couple months.

Once every 6 months or so I’ll call her myself as I’ll suddenly feel conscious that I haven’t spoken to her properly in a while and we end up chatting for at least an hour.

ETA that she will send me a WhatsApp if she needs to ask me something specific and vice versa.

Yes I do call my DIL . Not routinely but now and again . She calls me too . We are the ones to organise the get togethers and if the grandkids are having a sleepover . She stays at my place overnight sometimes with the kids if my son is working and we go shopping together.

Teenagerantruns · 05/08/2026 00:54

I dont call my adult children's partners regularly. I do call to say happy birthday to them or very occasionally if l cant get hold of my child and need to check something like travel arrangements or time we are meeting.
We all in a family watsapp group though so would normally send a general message and either my kids or thier partner will reply.

DoAWheelie · 05/08/2026 00:56

I never called my mother-in-law, but my late OH and my dad called each other several times a week for a chat. They also sometimes organised trips out just the two of them.

We also had a group chat of me / oh / my mother that was used most days.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 05/08/2026 00:59

My MIL calls me often, but we live close by so it’s not like she needs to call for a prolonged chat - if she wants that she can just come over. Primarily if she’s phoning me, it’s to arrange something, but we will chat over text. We have common interests and she will often send me things she thinks I will be interested in and vice versa. She lends me a lot of murder mystery books (of varying quality).

It’s lovely but I do regret telling her about my childhood pet bunny who I loved dearly because now she sends me loads of instagram reels of rabbits - it’s nice but once you’ve seen a few bunnies you’ve seen em all really. Mind you there’s worse issues to have with your MIL.

My pil's are dead now.
However when dh was working away Monday to Friday I would be on my own every evening after putting dc to bed.
One weekend we happened to be visiting in-laws and dfil pointed to their calendar. 'These are the dates nephew is away on the rigs so we always ring his dw for a chat as she's on her own.'
They never rang me.
I've never forgotten that feeling of meaning nothing to them even though I was their ds's wife and dm to their dgc.

cannynotsay · 05/08/2026 01:05

Yeah mine does. We actually like each other and get on so have a natter here and there x

Plogoni · 05/08/2026 01:13

Yup and call in too as she lives near by. I have a key ( but would only use it when asked too). Mine asked me to be her birth partner so am beyond delighted that we are close. My MIL was distant and that really impacted on her relationship with my kids - a shame.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/08/2026 01:43

yes, because she knows sometimes DH will forget to pass on messages so she might as well talk to me. he isn't my secretary and I'm not his appendage. DH won't know for example what time were back all week cos he's at work, so he doesn't get to plan when mil visits.

maxslice · 05/08/2026 04:33

My son and his girlfriend are in their thirties. They’ve been together for almost 4 years and moving in to a house together this week. I don’t call his girlfriend, but I do text her. She’s lovely.

TheChosenTwo · 05/08/2026 05:16

I don’t have a dil but my mil will call or message me, probably more than she messages dh 😂
Yesterday she asked if I was home and if so did I want any veg from her allotment. I was home and I was in the market for some tomatoes so she came round for a cuppa and dropped us off a big box.
She’s the loveliest lady and I’m so lucky to have her as my mil.

Ovoemconserva · 05/08/2026 05:25

My MIL rang me once and I didn't really know what to do. I was like Oh A is at work she said she's ringing to talk to me.

We do occasionally pass messages back and forth but it's more what DD needs/arrangements etc. we do get on when we see each other but not a lot to say really. Having said that I don't like talking on the phone to anybody.

CurlewKate · 05/08/2026 05:27

I have shared interests with both my ds’s girlfriend and dd’s boyfriend (now fiancé) so I do message them. Never call though.

mtobrokeme · 05/08/2026 06:42

My MIL rings me occasionally, usually when my husband is working away, just to see if I’m okay or I need anything doing for DS or the dog! It’s nice! But we see both sets of parents at least once a week anyway so not much need for it anyway!

cantsleepneedsleep · 05/08/2026 06:44

MIL & I call each other weekly.

NoahVale · 05/08/2026 06:45

i might message, she has her phone on mute, like many

BirdLandedonmyHead · 05/08/2026 06:46

I jave grequent communication with my MIL and actually see her a lot more often than DH does. Anything major we use the group chat between FIL, MIL DH and ne, but lits of the minor stuff its just us chatting.

A big part of the communication is about DDs but weve become friends over the years.

principalskinna · 05/08/2026 06:49

How weird. Of course!!

TorroFerney · 05/08/2026 08:01

My father in law may ring me once a year about a birthday present for his son but only if I’ve not seen him to ask in person. Mil dead but never when alive. My parents to my husband no. She doesn’t like him as he is a good husband and everything my dad wasn’t and I think that winds her up.

Lomonald · 05/08/2026 08:08

I have son in laws , ive text them occasionally about "stuff" never for a chat though.

Late Mil used to phone and we would chat if Dh wasn't in, i liked her.

Iloveeverycat · 05/08/2026 08:09

Never.

Betadelta · 05/08/2026 08:11

I don't phone my son's girlfriend but I do snap her on Snapchat. My MIL phones us on the landline, so I'll have a chat with her if I pick up, but it's DH she really wants to speak to.

ImpossibleGermany · 05/08/2026 08:11

Not just for a chat, no. But my son is notoriously bad at answering his phone or looking at messages so if I need to say something important I prefer to tell her, knowing she will then tell him. 😂

Rubyupbeat · 05/08/2026 08:14

Yes, we get on great and she phones me. Mainly texts and voice notes, but lots of chats.

LondonLass2026 · 05/08/2026 08:16

I got on really well with my son's last girlfriend. They had a lovely little flat in London together, and she and I were on the same wavelength and liked all the same things. I was so sad when they broke up.
