Disturbing case re surrogacy

I just read this on the DM website. Can't do links sorry. A couple in California hired a surrogate to have a baby for them. At the 20 week scan the baby was found to have a heart defect. This can be cured with a 75% survival rate. The couple want the surrogate to have an abortion. That is in her contract for this situation. She is now 35 weeks pregnant and there is suing and counter suing.
What a horrible mess.

The commissioning father was also a child sex offender who had sexually assaulted pre-pubescent girls.

He took the baby girl with him, leaving the baby boy with the surrogate.

That’s terrible. He should’ve been locked up.

I dread to think how they are all doing now. The girl who got taken is now the age of the girls her father abused.

They just don't lock these men up for long enough imo.

But however you might feel at the beginnng of the agreement might not be the same as you feel half way through. Surrogacy is fraught with problems and I agree it should be banned

Yes. There were similar issues I think as to the case highlighted by the OP with both parties suing each other.

I don't agree with it myself but let's say hypothetically I was ok with it. You can't compel another adult to have an abortion just because of the genetic link.

What financial protections do the surrogate's have? It must be difficult if you're really dependent on a large sum of money for the sale of a healthy baby and it all falls through.

There's been an update on this on Sky news. The surrogate is not allowed to contact the baby and is not allowed a say in its medical care. The biological parents have custody. Difficult to know what to think. Only that it shouldn't have been allowed in the first place

Scientists had better hurry up and invent an artificial uterus in which to grow these acquired human life forms. If one turns out faulty, they can just start again.

It is a fucking mess.

Whilst I agree that the surrogate parents may have made the same call with a child that was growing in her womb, the fact is they aren't. Pregnancy hormones are strong things.

It's all just so horribly fraught with issues I'm baffled they it's not banned.

I would bet they were a fertile couple who didn't want the inconvenience of a pregnancy. I feel that couples who go through devastating years ttc would be so desperate they wouldn't dream of this, perhaps I'm wrong.

I think it was a same sex male couple. The baby (now age 2) is healthy and in the couple’s custody, but the legal case is still going on.
