I just watched Bullitt. The 1968 film starring Steve McQueen. I first saw this at the cinema because it was being shown as a double bill with, I think Midnight Cowboy. And I liked it so much I later bought the DVD.

I'm older and when I was young Steve McQueen was the heart throb to die for. And I've known for many years he had feet of clay. Today watching him he actually reminded me of Daniel Craig. He isn't handsome by any stretch of the imagination. He is craggy. But he is so so attractive. I" m talking purely physical btw because I'm aware of his failings as a person.

And the woman foil to him in the film is Jacqueline Bisset. Beautiful to a fault. But totally characterless. And that's the thing isn't it? It's STILL the case women have to be beautiful and perfect physically.. But men can be actual people with character and flaws whereas women can't.

I wouldn’t call the likes of Merrill Streep, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Tilda Swinton, Olivia Coleman etc. flawlessly beautiful yet they’ve been incredibly successful actors.

Think standards do change, as in more "baby faced" men got popular this century. And women's standards changed too, as in women can now be muscly/ have tattoos. But I guess it's all personal preference.

Yes totally agree they are brilliant and respected.
But I don't think they get the adulation that some male actors get, despite the male actors not having the looks or talent to warrant their adulation.

It depends what you mean by adulation. Merrill Streep has had more Oscar nominations than any other actor and holds the joint record for number of Oscars won.
