Where to go in turkey?

Where you would recommend for spring next year? I'm into my history a lot. I did Athens in Greece this summer and absolutely loved it.

I know Greece and Turkey share a lot of history. Where would you recommend? Istanbul, Antalya or Cappadocia?

I also absolutely LOVE my food. I loved the food in Athens and want to see the similarities and differences in Turkish food.

It is a big country. How much time do you have? Dont try to see too many places if you are short of time. You could combine Istanbul Bursa (old Ottoman capital with lots to see) and Iznik (biblical Nicea) lovely small town by a lake with fascinating history. Food is brilliant, better than Greek food imho.

We did both Istanbul and Cappadocia in the same holiday (12 days or so) and absolutely loved both! We really liked Göreme for a buzzing place in Cappadocia and found the other top places that come up online to be a lot quieter, fewer cafés, restaurants and shops so depends which you prefer. We went in the autumn so not sure about weather but would absolutely recommend as a holiday.

In two weeks you could add Selcuk (for Ephesus) and a few days by the sea. The Roman and Greek remains in Turkey are everywhere. Do your family share your enthusiasm for ruins?
Transport between Istanbul Bursa, Simon and Selcuk is good and cheap.

Yes they do. We've also done Rome and loved it.

This. I've spent a lot of time travelling all over Turkey and for 2 weeks this would be good with 2 thirds of the time in Istanbul. I wouldn't bother with Antalya. When I travelled from Cappadocia to Istanbul I went via Ankara to visit Atatürk's tomb. Well worth it.

Thank you for this. Did you travel solo?

No.

Sorry. Pressed post too early. I did meet some solo female travellers but I wouldn't recommend it. I haven't been much during Erdogan's time partly due to the new culture.

I should have added that besides the classical remains there are many Byzantine buildings (notably Hagia Sofya in Ist.) Also lots of Ottoman buildings particularly in Bursa where the very best and cheapest Turkish Baths can be enjoyed.
The only drawback to the country (apart from Erdogan & Co.) is the price and availability of wine, for which Erdogan has to take the blame!
