What do you do in the morning when you’ve had guests to stay?

Husband’s uni friend and his wife stayed over last night - I don’t know them that well but we see them once or twice a year. I think it’s different when I have had a sibling or something stay as I expect them to be a bit more self sufficient.

It’s 10:30 and I think they are up but they haven’t appeared yet. I’ve been up since 8:30 which I always try and do when we have guests as there is nothing worse than sleeping at someone’s house and feeling awkward about getting up in the morning.

I’ve got dressed, cleared up from last night, and put on a load of washing but other than that I have just scrolled on my phone for the last two hours because I don’t know what to do with myself. DH has joined me and we are both sitting awkwardly on the sofa waiting 🤣

What do you do?

Ha ha go and bang pots and pans outside their room, or play really loud dance music! That’s quite a lie in for staying over at someone’s house. I’d get on with my day and just see when they emerge!

Start cooking bacon sarnies - the smell will draw them out 😋

Aydel · 02/08/2026 10:59

Start cooking breakfast or put the coffee on. Take coffee into the garden.

This is the part I hate about having overnight guests or being an overnight guests! And then there is the awkward small talk because you did all the good talking the night before...

I think, if I were you, and they are more DH's friends, I might have to go to the gym very urgently!

MyDarlingRose · 02/08/2026 11:02

I’m the exact opposite! Staying at someone’s house, got up at 9.30 and they’re still upstairs so I’m on the sofa awkwardly scrolling 😂

Sunnytraces · 02/08/2026 11:02

I just get on with what I would normally do just quieter. Maybe some morning gardening.
Apparently my house is weirdly great to sleep in for people who usually don't so I let people have a proper lie in. Then they usually appear post 9:30 confused about the fact they didn't wake up at 6am as usually 😂 My mother especially couldn't process that.
I am quite proud of the fact that not a single early riser has early risen in my house ever😂

Cook breakfast
make fresh coffee
sit in garden
put on music
i would certainly get up to partake

Are they up yet?

Im like you, I always wake early when I e guests, like 7 am, I then get dressed, tip toe downstairs, clean up and wait for everyone to get up

ive a friend who used to do this too, now she gets up at about 11 or 12. By which time her husband is up, we have all sorted brekkie, eaten it, and she wanders down, looks a bit dazed and tucks in.

shes early retired, mid fifties, and I think this is now her bed pattern, she stays up late and gets up late, she does it when she comes to my house too. But if I say to her husband is she awake, he says yeah, she’s just laying there. She sets her alarm for 9, I hear it, and she then proceeds to just lay there, I guess dozing. For a couple of hours, then gets already and comes down, showered and dressed.

i find it very odd. And a little impolite if I’m honest.

Christ I wish I had that problem. Whenever we have overnight guests (always DH’s family or friends as mine all live locally so no need to stay) they’re all bloody up and downstairs in the kitchen by 6.30/7am. Drives me crackers tbh as I naturally wake about 8am and then would love just 30 mins to myself in the morning to drink my tea and just zone out/ relax. Instead I almost hide upstairs until about 9am as I just can’t be arsed to get up and make endless small talk first thing (as someone else said, all the good convo has happened the day/ night before) I do also tell people to help themselves to breakfast or whatever if they’re up before us, but still, can’t these people get up later than 6.30am, especially on a Sunday when we’re all a bit hungover or whatever!

OP, I couldn’t imagine sleeping in in someone else’s house until 10.30 (unless you all didn’t get to bed til 4am or something) it’s rude IMO. I’d just start making noise now, or message them asking if they’re up and do they want a cup of tea or whatever.

I just carry on with my life. If I have to go out for some reason I leave a note and spare keys. I have people staying a lot, though, and I work from home so everyone is used to my ways.

I mean I don't go for a two hour jacuzzi in the only bathroom, but in general I just carry on as normal.

Dobeebeedah · 02/08/2026 14:11

I do my own thing if it's friends, and they do what they want. Sometimes they don't get up until 9 or 10, one has been known to stay in bed till lunchtime. Cereal, fruit and toast is always there even if I don't know them that well and they can help themselves.

We stayed at a friend's house and someone started vacuuming at 5.30/6am and it went on for a couple of hours! I think it was her DH. We got up when it finished and left early.

This is what I do. If needs must, I’ll call and say breakfast’s up, or some such thing. The night before I would have also just confirmed, we’ll likely be up about, eg 09.30, but no pressure, just get up when you want.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 02/08/2026 14:23

I’m glad it’s not just me who thought it was quite late! I always get up by 9 at the latest at someone else’s house even if I’m tired or hungover.

It was okay - they emerged about 11, we had the croissants I had been saving and DH took them back to the train station about 1.

I agree with posters who said all the good chat has happened the night before, that can be excruciating sometimes! We had Db and his partner back in May and they come such a long way we had to have them for two nights - I always feel like there needs to be designated private phone time before people are ready to dive back into being sociable 🤣
