What's your hobby?

Due to ongoing, never ending stress in my life I've lost my mojo/joie de Vivre/zest for life. Whatever you want to call.it, I've lost it. I think I need to immerse myself in a hobby but I just don't know what kind.

I hate sports of any kind so not at all interests in that. I exercise so have that covered. I adore all kinds of music, enjoy reading, am interested in arts and crafts etc but as I have inattentive ADHD I swing from one thing to another and lose interest really quickly. I really need one thing to focus on and hopefully enjoy enough to stick with it.

I can't really afford a huge outlay so something reasonably affordable.

Any suggestions? What hobbies keep you happy?

That’s right up my street especially the grave thing, I love looking around cemeteries, imagining what lives these people had lived. I actually find it to be calming and peaceful friends think I’m strange lol!

I will definitely look into that.

It really is worthwhile - I started mine in 1995 and it's been my constant companion ever since - pick it up & put it down whenever you want to. I started out walking round graveyards to 😁

Bell ringing
gardening
reading
book club
local history

Photography, photo editing, and photo competitions. I would absolutely love to have my own darkroom one day and process them myself.

I play the ukulele and I can't recommend it enough! There is a whole ukulele community out there. You can get involved as little or as much as you want. You can join a ukulele group, make new friends and perform at care homes etc if you want to. You can pick one up online for under £50 and there are loads of YouTube tutorials which is how I learnt to play. I'm not the best player but you don't have to be to get by and sound ok. Give it a go!

I have autism, adhd and dyspraxia and I have a lot of hobbies but what I really need to occupy my mind is a problem.

Finding solutions to problems is probably my best hobby. I can go down so many rabbit holes and learn so many new skills from different problems I come across every single day.

Of course I can always do some mindless crochet, or some rubber stamp carving, but I can also learn how to re-grout, or make the pots in my corner cupboard easier to get to, or work out how best to store christmas and halloween decorations so they're organised, and easily accessible for the chronically lazy (me).

inkgirl · 03/08/2026 02:14

I have autism and potential adhd, I go from one hobby to the next. My current hobby is colouring

FlashHeartFly · 03/08/2026 02:54

I’m a bit of an adhd hobby jumper, but the two that have stuck around are embroidery and writing. Both have enough hyper focus and yet still able to pick up and put down. I also like being able to stretch my creative legs with both of them.

This is where I found my course, I'm really enjoying it. I'm doing an acrylic one, Journey through colour.

I am really drawn to this. I do have a ukulele, I bought it for my son years ago when he wanted to learn but he never bothered. I need to go get it out of the loft.

Recently, adult DS was unwell and needed surgery. He lives in another city. Whilst waiting for his treatment, I felt I needed to avoid thinking about it 24/7 so I used multitask distraction. Watching streaming on iPad whilst cooking for the freezer or baking for the office. I know this isn't a hobby but including a multi task element might suit the ADHD

NB - he's well now 🙏

mondaytosunday · 03/08/2026 09:54

I crochet. Mostly wearables. I used to do wet felting which I enjoy but it’s very messy and you have to dedicate at least four hours at a time to it otherwise not worth it so I mainly did it in workshops until the woman running them retired. I’d need a big kitchen or dedicated space to do it, whereas crochet is very portable and I can do it while listening to a podcast or watching tv.
Gardening? I used to be into that but somehow have lost my enthusiasm, though every time I go to my friends house I am in awe of her weed free and lovely flowerbeds. She works more than me but still keeps it beautifully.
Id like to get into stained glass but that requires equipment too. Giant paper flower making looks fascinating but not sure how long term that would be, as once you’ve made a few that’s enough? Weaving - quite interested in trying that out. I love ceramics but again equipment, mess and expense. We did wood turning and made lovely plates and bowls but very expensive to take up at home or do in workshops!
I suppose decide first of it’s something to do at home, something you can take with you, or something that needs to be done at a workshop.

Same here - I’d love to be able to crochet but I just can’t do it! I do cross stitching which I really enjoy, but I find it harder as my eyes get older.

Get a pair of magnifying glasses with a built in light from Amazon. Total game changer. I was at the stage where I couldn't do things like cross stitch in the evenings as the light wasn't good enough, even with the overhead light on. The magnifying part is really good too. Makes it so much easier.

I do multiple crafty things. Embroidery, cross stitch, diamond painting, model making, adult colouring, needle felting, knitting etc. None of them are hugely expensive and I like to have a variety of projects on the go.

WorthySloth · 03/08/2026 09:57

My daughter has just started making jewellery twisting silver around stones etc. really pretty. Lego is also popular. I usually enjoy a bit of crochet but I’ve got out of the habit recently. I go to a walking group when I’m not at work and I’m a volunteer at parkrun also walk it when I can. Used to run but my fitness isn’t good enough for that at the moment.

also music. Lots of gigs both small and local and large and involve an overnight stay. Loads of pubs do music nights and never discount a jam night or open mike absolutely brilliant to watch and generally free.

ToadRage · 03/08/2026 10:19

I have ADD and i love to cross stitch. I like it cos I can put it down and pick it up as and when if I lose interest I can just leave it sometimes for days and carry on where I left off. Same with puzzle books I usually get the Take a Break favorites one. It can be difficult picking up the cross stitch at the very beginning but once you see the pattern coming together it's exciting. I would reccomend to start with samplers cos small motifs rather than a big project can produce results quicker. I have included pictures of some of my work.

Photography. I started with a point and shoot camera years ago during a very tough time in my life and now it’s absolutely my Thing. I even make money from it.
But mostly it’s creative, forces me to slow down and notice things and you can absolutely teach yourself through trial and error. I take my camera out all the time (we live in the countryside) - it’s super therapeutic.
Secondhand stuff reasonably priced from websites like MPB.

AlicePottery · 03/08/2026 11:28

I do loads of different craft related things: pottery, felt crafting, ACEOs, fimo, cyanotype, sewing, calligraphy etc. I also enjoy gardening as it gets me outside a bit. I sort of alternate between all of these depending on my mood. Pottery is an expensive hobby, the rest can be done pretty cheaply.

I find a lot of ideas on Instagram and Pinterest (and post some stuff too https://www.instagram.com/alice.pottery.and.stuff?igsh=b2Zwbm1uZ29ncDFn ).

@PaperSandbox I love this idea, maybe combined with reading a book from that country. I have a lot of notebooks, so I could do country itineraries, points of interest etc.

Yes it's like a research project (like @chingachush mentioned) with also a problem solving. Just like @Jimmyneutronsforehead, I really find my brain is happiest when it has a series of enjoyable and low-stress problems to work on, either actively or in the background.

I don't think I expressed myself well with the description sorry OP, yes I meant pretending I am able to travel to all these places. If I win the lottery and can totally change my life, I'll be all set with my travel plans! 😊

I had no idea what ACEOs were so googled it and think I might now have another hobby! 😂Looks fun.

Oldblower · 03/08/2026 13:53

Music (cello, oboe, singing), painting (furniture but I want to learn watercolours and pastels), planning holidays, sewing. When I retire I want to do a music degree and get into creative writing.

The possibilities are endless and if you get a few friends hooked then you can swap cards 😀

almostaschoolmum · 03/08/2026 14:08

Photobooking!! Depending on how old your kids are you’ll have years worth of memories to get through!! I’m currently either working on or planning to make about 20 different books 😂

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 03/08/2026 15:45

I have adhd and my current hobby is baking. I make sourdough bread and wraps regularly and then birthday cakes, cookies, brownies etc whenever I get bored.

Other hobbies I enjoy is yoga, twice a week really clears my mind. I enjoy playing on the switch, pokopia is really addictive. I also like Lego and like going for walks with an audio book on (don’t know if that counts as a hobby)

Hobbies I have all the stuff for but no longer get dopamine from is knitting, crochet, cross stitch, arty cakes using a spray gun, candle making, calisthenics, jigsaws, gem art, running probably more but that’s off the top of my head.

TaterTots68 · 03/08/2026 16:03

Fishing (any type), Lego, drawing and painting, crochet, I'll have a go a pretty much any craft (just not into sewing), reading, walking, craft beer, travel, camping (in our campervan NOT a tent!). Fishing and travel are my favourites.

OnePoisedPanda · 03/08/2026 16:04

I’m into swimming and reading but hardly find the time for either!
