I always find my homemade chocolate cake recipe slightly underwhelming. It’s not gooey or chocolatey enough. I want to make one next week for a family member who is visiting so please could you tell me any tips and tricks and recipes. Thank you

Betty Crocker!

Those are actually good. Cheat but good.

I've got a tip rather than a recipe. If adding cocoa powder (which can dry out a cake) stir it into 6 tablespoons boiling water and stir until a gooey mess, cool slightly then add to your cake mixture (coffee granules can be dissolved at the same time, I agree with pp that a loaded teaspoon brings out the chocolate). Another tip, if making buttercream, whisk room temp butter until white and fluffy before adding icing sugar - it takes longer than you think.

Replace some of the flour with hazelnut meal. Adds moistness and a divine flavour.

You want a devil's food cake recipe - much higher proportion of sugar and liquid than traditional chocolate sponge cake recipes, which keeps it really moist. If you want to balance out the sweetness then a chocolate ganache as a filling/icing works well.

It is, but there are plenty of fabulous "from scratch" recipes out there too that aren't much more hassle - it's mostly weighing and stirring.

Devil's Food Cake rather than a chocolate cake. It's a chocolate cake, but richer and more gooey with a chocolate fudge icing and filling.

This has been great, thank you. I think I’m going to go with Nigella and include some of the tips you’ve all given me. Thank you so much
