Singapore authorities investigating Massive Attack

There’s a thing on the BBC which says that Massive Attack held up the Palestinian flag and shouted “Free Palestine” at their concert. Supposedly Singapore are now investigating as they have some fairly strict rules on demonstrations and displaying another country’s flag.

I’m in a couple of minds about this. I think that Massive Attack have always been fairly political so perhaps this is to be expected. However the other part of me wonders why they were not told that this is a big deal in Singapore beforehand (they are due to perform in Seoul tomorrow - it’s not obvious whether they have been detained). The people who live in Singapore wouldn’t be able to do this stuff but there’s a good chance that this band will pay a fine and then leave the country.

Realistically nothing is likely to happen to them.

I, for one, applaud their unfinished sympathy.

Crikey didn’t know Singapore were so controlling, you live and learn.

Massively controlling. Fairly benign though. But renowned for a well regulated, highly structured system. Illegal chewing gum?

I can understand the band members not realising how this would go down - but I would expect the manager to know. MA are a really famous band, they must have people to look after them.

It’s rather backfired, the news story is about the band and Singapore, not Palestine.

Good for Singapore.

I think there was a story (years ago) about an American teenager who was vandalising cars and got the cane there.

Aaah yes I think I vaguely remember that.

Good for Singapore.

I’m glad that the famous people faced repercussions, not just ordinary people. Some of the laws in Singapore are (to my way of thinking) a little bit strange but the people who live there have to keep to them.

I wouldn't say it has backfired from their POV- it's made it a huge story

Good for Massive Attack denouncing a genocide.

But the story is not about Palestine. Unless, of course, the band were using Palestine to make themselves more famous.

Idiots. I’m sick of these virtue signalling tw*ts. MA have ‘spoken out’ in support of Kneecap and cancelled a concert in Georgia in support of ‘trans rights’. So not only Jew hating, but anti-women too. There’s something about Bristol that seems to produce this type of intolerable, self-satisfied lefty wokebro in vast numbers.

I’m a Labour member who used to love Massive Attack BTW, before anyone accuses me of being a right wing bigot.

It's about people feeling strongly that what's happening in Palestine is wrong.

Palestine is now a symbol of "anti-establishment" and "resistance" for various leftie "communist" types. Like Che Guevarra used to be. I personally feel sick of people turning complex and tragic unresolvable conflict into a simplistic symbol/ slogan to show that they are "on the right side of history". And this is ignoring a nasty antisemitic undercurrent.

I bet they knew about the laws but chose to ignore it.

newmenewwhatever · 31/07/2026 20:51

Sick of every concert now being political.
I watched MA in Manchester last year and it was appalling.
we left after 20 mins

That’s a real shame. Presumably they think that because you paid (possibly quite a lot), you have to stay and listen to their politics instead of just their songs.

My senior school was a bit like that - so many teachers wanted to talk about their politics.

Singapore has extremely strict laws on a whole raft of things. Always bemuses me why people think it’s some bastion of free speech and liberalism.

Or jumping on the bandwagon like Greta did.

MyCoralDreamer · 01/08/2026 12:03

Funny it’s always ‘Free Palestine’ and never anything else e.g ‘Free Iran’.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head to be honest. It’s a form of self-righteous narcissism with a side helping of anti-semitism.

Has someone invaded Iran and are they occupying the Country and murdering their kids? I mean I know America and Israel are killing Iranian citizens, including 164 kids who were at School and that’s horrific, but thankfully so far they haven’t actually invaded.
